Churches in Hayfield, Derbyshire query
« on: Friday 31 December 04 14:46 GMT (UK) »
I recently found that the High Peak Register Office will not issue copy marriage certificates unless the church where the marriage took place can be named.

As I don't know the churches in that area, can anyone tell me which churches of C&E denomination would have performed marriages in Hayfield, Derbyshire, in the period 1854-1871.

Thank you.

Hi Lindy

If you have the ref from http://www.ancestry.co.uk or http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

or

you can search the full set of indexes at the following pay per view site

http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/

then you can order direct from the GRO with just the refs. from the index

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Unfortunately, a lot of local registry offices still have no composite index to their marriage books which are arranged by church.

Does this help at all?

Thank you Casalguidi.

I do have the St Cath's index references for the two people I'm examining, but the images on the 1837online for their possible spouses are in one case unavailable, apparently because it's one of the worst and can't yet be scanned and in the other case, the page number on the particular entry I'm checking is entirely illegible.

I'm frankly reluctant to use the GRO service, and will do only if all other avenues are closed, hence the hope of finding which churches would be likely.  The GRO did provide an excellent service when they kicked off a few years ago but my experience of it since has been pretty dismal - sending the wrong certs/illegible copies/copies lost in the post/telephone details lost - it took me three months and numerous phone calls to get one cert from them about 18 months back, so I gave up on 'em after that.  And of course, they make a charge whether they find what you want or not, unlike the registry offices.  Given the high volume of certs I've ordered over the years, the registry offices have enabled a considerable saving!

Nevertheless, many thanks for your prompt reply.

Kind regards
Lindy

Hi Lindy

Might this link help.................

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dusk/hayfield.html

Perhaps the person who runs the site would be prepared to give some advice. :-\

Personally, I have never had any problems with the GRO and have found their copies better than some of the wrongly hand-transcribed ones available locally but, of course, it does depend on the registry office concerned.

Good luck

I'm sorry but the link refers only to the parish of Hayfield and guess you may want the whole of the registration district:
