Miagre1 Scavenger Hunt... Everyone Welcome To Join In.
« on: Tuesday 15 January 08 13:24 GMT (UK) »

Hello again everyone.   This week it's Miagre1's (George) Scavenger Hunt and I think it's going to be an easy one for you Hunters.

You've done so well on all the others finding out details hidden for years.   I'm thinking you'll do the same for George.

Good luck and good hunting.

                                    **********************
Looking for factual documentation for: -

Birth of William Brown Linklater

And

Birth of Robina Cantly (Cantley/Cently)  his spouse

WB marries Robina 7th November 1847 in St Hilda’s Church Middlesbrough County of Yorkshire.

He is recorded Sailor / Father – William Linklater/ Fathers occ – Farmer

She is recorded  Father – Nathaniel Cantley/ Fathers occ – Gardener.

IGI gives WB’s Bapt as 27th October 1826

Census dating ties in with c1826 as does age at burial.  18th March 1880

Further documentation of age – Will and provenance thereof

The census give his birthplace as  Orkney

No positive date of birth for Robina

Census implies 1826 for birth date.

Age at death implies 1826.  burial 17th August 1864

The census give her birthplace as Longhope (Hoy) Orkney

Proven Data ends here.

I contacted “The Orcadian” newspaper a Mrs Margaret Watters kindly responded.

Data from Mrs. Watters -
Nathaniel Cantley, Gardener at Melsetter House Hoy.
Burial recorded at Old Walls  Church - Outpensioner (no Kew record present)

William Linklater
Census: - Occupation HBC (Hudsons bay Company)
Sasines give tenancy of a farm called Garth and later, various other buildings in Stromness.
Sasines give Wife as Margrat Broun

I would like to prove positive  if the above said Nathaniel Cantley and the said William Linklater are the respective parents of Robina Cantley and William Brown Linklater.

Hi Tati,

You were quick off the mark!  :)

I got W B's baptism from IGI as you see. Therein lies a bit of a problem with different researchers for the IGI getting different dates etc,

George

Yes, sorry George, saw that afterwards  :-[

I think I can ID the Nathan Cantley mentioned by Mrs Watters on the 1841 census for Walls but that's not much help  :P

It would be great if you posted the 1841 census details or anything you find Tati as my original notes are now mostly illegible through water damage.

Nathaniel Cantley, Robina's Father, had a son Nathan, I believe, to Margrat Moir (Moor)

Nathaniel (the gardener) was buried May 23rd at Walls

Hi Genie,

I have a post diary re. Isle-a-la-Crosse, of 'a' William Linklater, from Manitoba archives via Kew dated 1806.

IF ( big if) that's my man.  ;D

This William is also referenced in Robertson's Journals.
