« on: Saturday 19 January 08 23:42 GMT (UK) »
Could some kind person please look up for me in the 1841 & 1851 census  a

John Sands, born circa 1825 in Heathfield Sussex.

Or at least that is what he has put in the 1861 census.

Would like to see who his parents are.

Thanks

Hi Clare

Just so we are on the right track.....

Is this:  John S SANDS ?
1861: He's a Labourer and married to Mary Ann in 1861, living in Brighton Sussex?
John Samuel SANDS married Mary Ann STANDING in 1852, Brighton RD?
Eldest Child William born Brighton. Next boy Walter Samuel born 1856?

Cheers

Hi Clare

No John Sands b  Heathfield in either census that I can see.   However, there is a John born 1826 living in Brighthelmstone.  He's not with the family in 1851, but they say the two older children still at home were born in Heathfield.....
PLUS

Although their son John was baptised in Alfriston, other children were baptised at Heathfield.

1841 : ho107. Piece 1121. Folio 35 Pg. 28

Barbary            35
John                 15
Barbary             9
Mary                  6
Dorcas               5

All born in county

1851:  HO107. Piece 1645. Folio 250. Pg.5

SANDS

Simeon  Head  M  46  Labourer  b. Alfriston, Sussex
Barbara  Wife  M  45   b. Wilmonton
Mary Ann  Dau  S  17  b. Heathfield
Dorcas    Dau  S  15  b. Heathfield
Simeon   Son  9   b. Brighton
Philedelphia  Dau  7  b. Brighton
Elizabeth  Dau  5  b. Brighton
William Walt.  Son  1.  b. Brighton

John ??? not yet found in 1851 - will keep looking

But I think this is them?

John Samuel Sands b. 23 Sept 1825 bap 18 Dec 1825 Ebenezer Independent, Alfriston Parents Simeon and Barbara

Mary Ann, Dorcas and Simeon baptised in Heathfield, the younger ones in Brighton

Ambly - saw your post after I'd typed this - glad to see marriage was for John Samuel, hadn't got that far but it ties in with the bap. record.

Thank you both for your work.

I to had picked up on the John Samuel Sands b. 23 Sept 1825 bap 18 Dec 1825 Ebenezer Independent, Alfriston Parents Simeon and Barbara

I just felt a bit uneasy with the entry being in Alfriston which is quite a way from Heathfield. But if there is no one else in either census that fits then it must be right.

Oh forgot to say, yes that is the correct family in the 1861 census.
William Sands is the person I am researching. He and his family are very elusive as well. I find them in 1881 with their daughter Elizabeth ( my line). Then in 1891 he seems to be in Wandsworth jail, and his wife and child have disappeared.

Elizabeth appears again in 1892, marrying William Ratcliffe in Dover at the age of 14. She then puts her place of birth in the 1901 census as Dover, when she was born in Greenwich.

They don't like to make things easy, do they.

Thanks Clare

Hi Clare

They certainley don't - dropping us crumbs at a time! but I guess it wouldn't be half as near as fun if it were too easy  ;D  ;D  ;D

My thought was , could it be that the Ebenezer Independant was their nearest place of Worship for that faith, or there were family ties to that particular church....

Seeing Simeon & Barbara's children on the 1851 though with their places of birth, is heartening and strengthens the already strong liklihood it's a match.  I guess John's marriage certificate would hopefully seal it, if his father is on it as Simon/Simeon SANDS.

Cheers

Hi both -

Simeon says on the census that he was born in Alfriston - so maybe being as John seems to be the first child he was baptised at the "family home town"
