Robert McIndoe Robertson went to Australia in 1852
« on: Wednesday 23 January 08 14:54 GMT (UK) »
I would like to have the 1841 and 1851 census details for Robert McIndoe Robertson.  I believe he was born in 1831 and went to Southern Australia in 1852.  The bad news is that I don't know where he was born except that it was definitely Scotland.  Any help much appreciated,
Regards,
Abiam

Abiam,
There is a Robert McIndo Robertson listed on familysearch.org as being born 4th June 1831 at Abbotshall, Fife, Scotland. Below that there is an entry for Robert McIndow Robertson born 5th June 1831 - same place, different date, different spelling. Must be the same person as parents listed are the same for both entries - Alexander Robertson & Ann Keddie. Maybe you could post your request on the FIFE board, now that you know where he was born

Hi All,

Snap, dinarina, I can confirm the same 2 entries are in SP also. I can now see him in the 1841 census with rest of family, in High Street, Linktown.

That's great!  He is the man I want - he married my GGGrand uncles widow in 1855 in Australia.  He was said to be a friend of hers and as they were both born in Abbotshall it must be right!
Thank you Tom,
Abiam

If anyone is interested he became awealthy land owner in South Australia!

Hi Abiam,

That's good we got the right man, if you give us the GGGrand uncles widow, we may be able to prove it.

Thanks, I have her and her family!  Anne Wilson daughter of Robert and Margaret Wilson of Abbotshall etc.  My relation died in a ranch accident and his widow Anne called on Robert to help her and they married a year later. Not surprised I think she was only 27 a widow and 2 boys aged 3 and 1 and a large amount of land and cattle.

How would anyone cope with that in 1854?
Thank you very much for your help,
Abiam

Hi Tom,
You have been very helpful and I thank you.  I am writing up the story of my GGGrand Uncle  who died in Australia un 1854.  His widow was Anne Wilson of Abbotshall and after her husbands death she married Robert McIndoe Robertson in Adelaide.  It is quoted that she contacted an old friend - RMRobertson and they married a year later.

They were both from Abbotshall Fife and I am interested to find out whether Robert and Anne came out to Australia individually or with their famillies and when.  I know Robert sailed from Liverpool in 1852 but I haven't found a passenger list for him.  Anne I have no idea when she came except that it was before 1850 when she married for the first time to my GGGrand uncle.

Also I am interested to know the reason for their departure to Australia.  What was happening at the time in Abbotshall?

Any ideas appreciated,
Abiam
