Elizabeth Webster, born Bermondsey but baptised where?
« on: Monday 03 March 08 18:46 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

I have been searching for the baptism record of Elizabeth Webster. She was born circa 1787 in Bermondsey (1871 census) and her parents were James & Ann Webster (from James' will & momumental inscription in Margate). I have searched the St Magdalen Bermondsey PRs 1782-1812 (parishregister.com) and the IGI but find nothing. At some point after her birth the family moved to Kent as Elizabeth married there to Gibon Rammell in 1811 & her parents were buried there too

What other parishes should I consider for her baptism?

Hi Gillian
One of my ancestors who quotes Bermondsey as her place of birth on the census was registered at St George the Martyr Southwark.  I understand there is another church in the area, St Mary's Newington. The IGI covers these two churches. :)

Hi Amanda,

I have looked on IGI but cannot find anything that fits. Maybe the family moved from Bermondsey soon after Elizabeth was born. I am not aware of any siblings either. In James' will, the father, only Elizabeth is mentionned.

Thanks,

Gillian

I also searched the IGI for you and the two parishes don't seem to be mentioned for the dates you need. Perhaps the LMA will have copies  ???

GENUKI suggests St George the Martyr are held at the LMA. Other parishes in the area include St Olaves, St Saviours and Christchurch.

Might be worth looking up: www.genuki.org.uk

I think these are the churches which were open in the area at the time.  Most other churches were not built until the 1830s

St Giles Camberwell
St Mary at lambeth
St Mary Rotherhithe
St Olave, Tooley Street
St Saviour Southwark
St George the Martyr, Borough high st
St Mary, Newington Butts
St Mary, Battersea Church Road

Don't forget the area was Surrey at that time.  Not many records on the net I'm afraid.
Of course she could have been born in Bermondsey and baptised elsewhere

Hi,

There is also St John Horsleydown Church which was built around 1730.

This was situated just south of Tower Bridge, but was destroyed in the war.

Regards,

Hi

I am also reseaching Bermondsey ancestry with a few problems due to lack of index coverage for the parish.

Unfortunately my ancestor was born in 1776 according to the 1851 census and death cert and the parishregister site only has St Mary Magdalen indexed from 1782 onwards. She was Ann Wood or Goodacre as she wed Thomas Roberts in Kent in 1807 and was Ann Goodacre, a widow. In 1851 Ann Roberts was living with her elderly sister Frances Harrison bc1771. Frances last son was born Thomas Wood Harrison which leads me to think the maiden name of Frances and Ann was Wood.
