1891 census Glamorgan - Puncher & Olsen
« on: Tuesday 11 January 05 19:58 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for John Edward Puncher b1866 in Northam who I believe to be living in Barry or Cadoxton in 1891, possibly as a lodger.  May also have his father with him, another John Edward Puncher b 1832.  Could be listed as Punchard

Also, Prudence Olsen b1856 in Swansea living in Swansea area with at least one child Brenda b1890.

Any info on these two would be great.  Thanks.

Is it just the 1891 census you are interested in? If you want to search in earlier census' returns for the Glamorgan area I can help you

Regards Jen :D

The Punchers moved to Barry from Northam, Devon around 1890 so would not be on earlier Glamorgan censuses.

If you have any info on Prudence Olsen, that would be great.  She was born Prudence Leworthy in 1856 in Swansea to William and Emily who were from Devon (Berrynarbor and Ilfracombe).  I think she had at least one brother and possibly a sister too.  My nan seems to think she lived in Port Eynon near Swansea at one time but is not sure.

Thanks a lot

Thanks for that - it's great.  Do you know why so many moved over?  I know the Punchers were stone masons so I can imagine the call for that all over but shoemakers?!

Did you have any luck on the 1891 census?  I have found the rest of John Puncher's family in Devon at that time but he is not there and I know that they were in Barry by 1901 so am assuming that's where he was in 1891.

You never know - you could have been at school with my relations!!  Small world really isn't it!  I spent 4 years a Swansea Uni but never knew my family were from that area until recently - shame as I could have had a look around where they lived for graves etc had I known.  Ah well - good excuse for another visit I think!

I think it could be the one I am looking for.  I know that her husband was a seaman so he may well have been away on the night of the census.  The daughter is the right age and was Brenda Prudence so perhaps was known by her middle name.

Thanks a lot for that info, VAT
