Does anyone know where Speedwell Street St Woolas Newport was please? It is mentioned in the 1881 census.

Hi tinka

St. Woolos is a parish that covered the western portion of the town and borough of Newport.

Speedwell Street came under enumeration district 31 in the 1881 census and was part of the Holy Trinity ecclesiastical district.  From what I can gather from the description of the enumeration district it was close to Kings Parade and High Street.  High St. is one of the main thoroughfares of Newport ( the railway station if I am not mistaken is on High St)  so Speedwell St. must have been pretty close to what is now the city centre.

Sorry I cannot be more exact, I will try and find out if it is still there.

What a coincidence!  I was talking about this a few days ago and actually looked up an entry on the 1881 who lived in High Street, St Woolos.

Speedwell Street (or Terrace) was in the Pillgwenlly area of Newport - that's the docks area.  Many Irish immigrants came to Newport in the middle of the 19th century and they settled in that area.  In 1887 St Michael's Roman Catholic church was built on the corner of Clarence Street and High Street to cater for the many catholics in the area.

High Street was renamed 'St Michael Street!  The 'High Street' in city centre is a different place.

Speedwell Street no longer exists but St Michael Street is still there.  It runs off Church Street and Speedwell Street used to run parallel to St Michael's Street.

Just out of interest, tinka, does the person you're interested in have an Irish connection?

I hope you don't mind me being a bit of a know-all, Pritch19, but 'Pill' is my 'specialised subject'.  ;)

Perfectly ok denben, just glad someone could put the record straight.  Gladly leave future Newport queries to you.   ;)

Hi Pritch19 and DenBen, many thanks for helping me to solve the whereabouts of Speedwell Street.

I am not sure DenBen if the family living there were Irish but I will get back to you on that one.

The transporter bridge is my favourite landmark in Newport.

I know a little about Newport, my 4 x greatgrandfather was living in Newport in 1797 and I live here today. Funny thing you should mention Speedwell st, I helped a neighbour of mine a few months ago find her grandfather on the census who lived in Speedwell st around 1900 by the name of Edward Dahill.

I have a few Johns & Kellys directories on my website

and in the not too distant future I hope to have a transcription of the St Pauls & Holy Trinity parish records on my website.

I am very familiar with a lot of Monmouthshire families and have researched many hundreds of pedigrees. If you want any help with Newport families I am sure I can help.
