MOSS - London (Shoreditch, Stepney)
« on: Thursday 13 January 05 09:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am researching my MOSS line from Australia.

From furthest back I have:

George MOSS m. Jane BOYZO 25 Aug 1755 Spitalfields, Stepney.  Their children all born at Shoreditch were:  Richard (1756) - my line, Elisabeth (1766), Mary (1768)

Richard MOSS married Elizabeth MURPHY 8 Aug 1874 at St Dunstans, Stepney.  Their children all born at Shoreditch:  Mary (1785) - my line, William (1786), Elisabeth (1788), Sarah (1790), William (1791), Nancy (1792), Eleanor (1794) and Kezia (1796).

Mary MOSS b. abt 20 Feb 1785 married Cornelius Himes (Hines, Hyams) 13 Apr 1802 St Dunstans, Stepney.  The had the following children:  Thomas, Cornelius (my line - a convict sent to Australia), Mary, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Esther, Sarah and Henry.

I am interested in finding more information on this family and other MOSS researchers.

Many thanks

Carol

I have a MOSS line too.  John William Moss was born 1823 in Bradwell Near the Sea - Essex but spent most of his life in London.
His mother was Amelia Flack and his father John Moss.....

Hi Emmeline,

My friend's family have Jewish connections which sems to be making them even harder to trace. Moss is a common name but the forname WOLF is not.

No trace in the usual Ancestry files and only one in teh IGI who would possibly, given the dates been George Moss' brother.

Hopeyou have more luck than we are at present.

Hi Robyn in Wodonga

Thanks for your reply. I had often wondered about a Jewish connection with the name Moss. My father was always thought to be very Jewish in his looks  - though that may not be much to go on .

However, John Moss and family lived for many years around Whitechapel - Jewry St. etc.

There seems a certain Jewish connection with the name Wolf.

Wishing you good luck from across the ditch ::)........

Hi Emmeline,

Have just received info that George was really GABRIEL and he was definintely Jewish.

Have sent all this info to my friend and she will look at the Australian source documents dating from 1830's-1974 when he died.

Still no luck in finding him in the UK  but will keep looking.

Emmaline,

Just had a thought, I am looking for an entry into Australia of a man who gave his name as THOMAS HENRY EMMS when he married in 1842.

I have not been able to locate any arrival convict or otherwise with this name. He suposedly arrived in 1826 when he would have been about 7 years old.

AS I have been searching for quite some time now I have moved on to acronyms etc and Thos HY Emms
might well have been written for Thos HYAMS. What do you know about your Thomas Hyam?

I ask this as there is a complete lack of any reference to any Thomas Emms in the colonies in the period before his marriage. This is most unusual one would have expected a reference of some kind to show up. Perhaps ypour Cornelius used an alias!

He is the only one of 22 arrivals into Australia that I have not been able to pin down.

Just being hopeful

Hi Robyn - I think you intended this information for Carol but I am sure she will pick up on it.

It sounds very interesting to me and may lead you both to something........

Good wishes for successful searching.
