Lee missing in 1871 Preston census:
« on: Tuesday 25 March 08 17:02 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me find Thomas Lee the 1871  Preston census:

Thomas Lee born c 1863/4  Preston.
Parents: Margaret and Jane.

I have access to ancestry.co.uk, but I think the 1871 census for Preston is missing the street I am looking for.

It is not this family.
Parents James, Jane
Thomas Lee b c1863

This is the person I am looking for in the 1881 census
In 1881 Census
at 38 Lady St, Preston (All Saints area)
Michael Hanlon born c 1825 Waterford Ireland age 56 foundry labourer.
Margaret Hanlon born Preston age 52, (born c 1829)
* Thos Lee age 17, working as a foundry labourer,  born Preston c 1864, Shown as the son of  the above

Father James Lee may be dead before the 1871 census.

Thanks for that.

I think you have the correct one, I spent days searching by street on Hanlon & Lee

Never thought to try variation on spelling

Thanks

I believe the Fish St one is the same person as I know from old family stories that Margaret Hanlon was an ancestor married to a Lee, but I did no know which generation.

(I have also looked at  Margaret Twiceaday but I don't think she is the same person, but like you I could not find a Marriage)

I am trying to find more info on James Lee if anyone can help

James Lee born before 1847 (probably around 1830) died after 1862 (probably before 1870)
Married probably before 1864
Margaret ?? born 1829 (she later married Michael Hanlon)
Child
Thomas Lee born c 1863/4 (Probably Mar 63 – Feb 64, names James as his father on marriage certificate)

Margaret (Lee) Hanlon died in 1894 aged in her mid sixties. (Death entry: Margaret Hanlon born abt 1831,  d 1894 Apr-May-Jun Preston 8e)

1891 census (05-Apr 1891)
Living at 39 Malt Street, Preston
Thomas Lee head age 27 general labourer, born c 1864
Jane wife age 28 cotton weaver, born c 1864
Margt Ellen dau age 6 scholar born c 1885
*William son age 3 born c 1888
Margaret Hanlon mother widow age 62 born c 1829
All born Preston

In 1881 census
Living at at 38 Lady St, Preston
Michael Hanlon, head, age 56 [born c 1825] Waterford Ireland, foundry labourer.
Margaret Hanlon, wife, born Preston? age 52 b c 1829
* Thomas Lee age 17, son, foundry labourer,  born Preston [c 1864] recorded as the son of  the above

1871 Census Preston (Parish St Peters, district 52)
No 6 Back of Fish St [This is a few hundred yards from Lady St]
Michael Hanlon    45 Labourer in cotton mill b Ireland
Margaret Hanlon  40 Cotton Weaver b Preston
Thomas Hanlon    8 Scholar & Cotton Tenter b Preston

I think this is James Lee (James Lee  born abt 1817  died 1867 Apr-May-Jun Preston)

But I am unsure which person he is the earlier censuses, the only candidate apppears to be this one but he married Mary Grimes, but lived in the next street to Fish st
(Singleton Row is next Street to Craggs Row, then Fish St)

1841 Census, Preston [Possible c 46 years at Thomas’s Birth]
Singleton Row (near Moor Lane)
*James Lee     25 b c1816
Ann Whally    60
Mary Whally    25
Robt Whally    65
Robt Whally    3

1851 Census, Preston [Possible c 46 year old at Tom’s birth] [Possibly same as  ref J4?]
73 Singleton Row
Living as Lodgers in the Acers family household
Ellen Lee    4
*James Lee    34 Handloom Weaver b Samlesbury c 1817 [Just ouside preston]
Possibly same person as J4?

1861 Census, Preston  [This person married Mary Grime in 1864]
1 Craggs Row (St Thomas area)
*James Lee     44 Cotton Weaver b Preston c 1817
Mary Grime     43
Living as a lodger in Mary Grimes household, she has 8 children between 8 months to 20 years old

There is a Margaret Hanlon My best guess is she may be a sister of Michael Hanlon
1861 Preston Census:
Margaret Hanlon age 23 Born Dundalk Ireland c 1838 unmarried (with her 2 sisters as lodgers, St Peters District, Tank? Row, This was near Craggs Row where James Lee then 44 years old was living as a lodger in the Grime household)

You are correct.

Thomas Lee's mother was Margaret Twiceaday it looks like he was born illegitimate and later took his fathers surname of Lee

Birth: Thomas Twiceaday
Thomas Twiceaday
Year of Registration:    1863
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Preston Volume: 8e Page: 425
