Hi Betty Boo,
The fact that John Greig and Ann Lownie had a child named William born 17 June 1798 in Dundee does not actually PROVE that this same William Greig is the one who married Janet Mortimer in Dundee in 1826 as the Marriage certificate does not state the name of either parent. It could just as easily have been William Greig born Dundee in 1805 to William Greig and Ann Ballingal.
So unfortunately, the matter has still not been solved.

Hi folks
This has been the problem from the start, the choice of 2 sets of parents for William!  The fact that William and Janet  had a daughter named Ann doesn't help with the Scottish naming process either, as both of the possible grandmothers are both named Ann, but if we look at the naming process for the sons, eldest named for paternal grandfather (William) and second son named for maternal grandfather (Samuel) this would veer to the grandparents being William Greig and Ann Ballingal, so I don't think we will ever solve the mystery.
Thanks to everyone for their help
