Hello Fiona

I might have something - am not sure, I've got some kind of Baird-Douglas connection that I can't explain.  ???

I have an ancestor named James Baird Grierson born circa 1884 in Lochmaben (according to Census 1891), a Driver with the Army Service Corps who died on Active Service in Egypt in October, 1919.

Having hammered my head against a brick wall in terms of birth records for him, I have discovered that his mother was a Janet Imrie, who on her marriage certificate (also in 1884) to an Alexander Grierson called herself Janet Imrie Douglas.

From the 1891 Census, James Baird is registered as the stepson of Alexander Grierson, however, on the Imrie Douglas/Grierson marriage certificate, Janet is listed as a Spinster.

I am making the dangerous assumption that James Baird (Grierson) was born out of wedlock.
His mother (the Janet Imrie Douglas) was also born out of wedlock, to an Isabella Imrie and a Thomas Moffat.

Don't know if it helps, but happy to share info.

Fiona

Many thanks.

Have partly solved the conundrum.

The "Baird" comes from a Janet Baird; who was James Baird Moffat's Great Grandmother (born sometime around 1807), and living with her daughter, grand daughter and 2 great grandchildren  in Marjoriebanks in 1881.

James was the illegitimate son of Janet (Imrie) Baird Douglas - still no idea where the "Douglas" comes from  ???.  Will have to dig a little deeper  ;)

Hi JLJ & Peaches

after reading Peaches post I think we do have a connection :). The only child I had for James Baird/Isabella Boyes was James b1808,didnt realise there was a Janet Hunter Baird b1807.
I will give you the info I have (which was kindly given to me by Peaches, way back)and you can make your own mind up about the Douglas bit.

James Baird babt1790 m Isabella Boyes 21st  May 1805,Lochmaben
children
Janet Hunter Baird b1807
James Baird b1808

James Baird b1808 m Janet Douglas 21 Jan 1856 Lochmaben,
this is James Bairds 2nd marriage
child
Janet Graham Douglas Baird b28th June 1862 Lochmaben.

Janet Douglas (James's wife)was b1821 Anwoth/Balmaghie,Kirkcudbright,parents James Douglas & Dorothy Cummin/MacKenzie.

Hope above helps with your mystery.

Fiona

I have this Baird family in my tree.

James Baird babt1790 m Isabella Boyes 21st  May 1805,Lochmaben
children
Janet Hunter Baird b1807
James Baird b1808

James Baird b1808  1st married Jean Sharp about 1830. They had 8 children James, Andrew, John, Mary, William, Grace, John, and Jane. Jean (Jane) Sharp died about the birth of their last daughter Jane. James Baird then married Janet Douglas 21 Jan 1856 Lochmaben, and their child
Janet Graham Douglas Baird b28th June 1862 Lochmaben.
My line is from James son of James Baird and Jean Sharp.

I have an interesting story concerning James Baird (b1808), which I found in the Dumfries & Galloway Standard, when I visited the DFHS.

"Dumfries & Galloway Standard, 2nd Agust 1848

JUSTICE OF PEACE COURT, ECCLEFECHAN, 22ND JULY

James Baird, stocking-maker or labourer, residing at Broomhill Park, in the Parish of Lochmaben, pleaded guilty to an assault upon Robert Tenning, farmer, residing at Lochfield, upon the 21st ult, on the public road near Roucan Village, and was fined 10s, or to be imprisoned 10 days."

Let me know if I can help further.
