William Hardy c1803 . Ash ?
« on: Tuesday 10 June 08 12:08 BST (UK) »
Hello There.

I have William Hardy and his wife HAMNTUL House, residing at Puddletown on the 1841/1851/1861 census.......

On the 1851 census, he states he was born Pales Ash ?? and on the 1861 he says Puddletown. Hamntul was definitely born and baptised there, but I can find no trace of William (Dorset online parish clerk project )

Is there such a place as Ash ? and where would it's residents be likely to be baptised ? I am looking for William's parents.......

Any help much appreciated

Kind Regards

JeannieR

There is a Doles Ash Farm just East of Piddletrenthide. It is about five miles North of Piddletown/Puddletown, and not in the same parish, but the 1861 entry may be wrong.

The 1851 entry does look like Poles/Pules Ash, rather than Doles, but it may be worth looking further North. I looked in Dorset-opc and could see a John Hardy s Edward and Mary Hardy, b 1806 in Piddletrenthide (and died in 1807), but no William. Frustratingly though the 1803 entries are missing from the BT, so it may be worth looking in the originals.

Thank you Richard

I am hoping to visit Dorset in the near future, so all information is gratefully received......

I think a ordnance survey map may come in useful. My knowledge of the English countryside has improved greatly, since I started genealogy !!

Thank You once again, I shall certainly look in to this further.

Kind Regards

Hi Jeannie

This may help - Doles Ash is/was adjacent to Piddletrenthide

There is a baptism in Piddletrenthide for William Hardy on 13 Jan 1805 - son of Joseph & Sarah Hardy

Hi Jeannie

Follow up on previous reply

There was a marriage between Joseph Hardy and Sarah Stainer on 29.12.1792 at Melbury Bubb (not that far away from Piddletrenthide) - witnesses John Knight and Thomas Edmonds

Hope it helps

Ray..........

That's it !!

Thank you very much. I was going around in circles , so put my Hardy's on to the back burner for a while......

John Knight is the link......He was the father of Jane Knight, who became Thomas Hardy's great grand mother.......

Must get out my pieces of paper again.......

Once again, thankyou

William Hardy is the brother of my grt grt grandfather.William was baptised at Piddle Trent Hide in 1805.He married Hamutal House in 1827.
William had 4 brothers,2 born Melbury Bubb & 2 born Puddletown. There has always been a query where William actually born, the problem is his parents moved around quite a lot.
I believe that William was born Mel Bubb, but will confirm one day.
Hope this has helped, you can always contact me at (*)
I would like to know what reason you are looking at William.family?

Hello Jonny,

And welcome to Rootschat....

Well, I have spent all morning searching my tree, for this William Hardy , born 1803 to no avail. I thought I was going loopy !!

Then I realised , that He is connected to a gentleman, who approached me through GenesReunited, who asked me to help him prove that this William is connected to the Thomas Hardy and Thomas Masterman Hardy trees.....

I though at one point I could . (Because of John Knight being a witness at a wedding to his possible parents ) I am  a 4th great grandaughter of John Hardy, and Jane Knight , who were the great grandparents of Thomas Hardy, the writer. I tried to make a connection to your William and just couldn't......

If you would like the name of the person who contacted me , I will send it in a PM , when you have responded to this post.

With Kind regards

JeannieR

Many thanks for your reply, would appreciate any info.

There is a connection to Thomas Hardy but it is only a distant one.For example my grandfather Charles Valentine Hardy was a second cousin.

The tree split 3 distinct  ways from the time of Thomas Hardy of Toller Welme,my direct line, yours & the Puddletown line.I have tracked back to
Drouet le Hardy in Jersey.

Best wishes,

John
