Arthur Parton Stottesdon, Shropshire Birth record request
« on: Thursday 12 June 08 01:42 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me find the birth record (and who his parents were) of Arthur Parton. He was born abt. 1846 in Stottesdon, Shropshire.  His mother's name was Elizabeth.  He is first seen on the 1851 census living with his mother Elizabeth Parton and Grandmother Mary Parton.  Elizabeth is listed as unmarried, so not sure if Parton is her actual maiden name or a married name.  She is also listed as Mary's daughter instead of daughter-in-law.  Anyway, I have not been able to find any birth record for Arthur and would like to find out who his father was and what Elizabeth's maiden name was.  Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jackie

hello Are you sure Arthur is Elizabeth's  son??

Could Arthur be one of her other childrens child.

If it is the correct family 1841 there is a grandchild Thomas living with them.

Do you have him on any other censuses?

The civil registration district for Stottesdon would be Cleobury Mortimer. It doesn't look as if the birth was registered but I would check with the local registry office just to be sure. I think Cleobury Mortimer is now covered by Bridgnorth. Even if Elizabeth did register the birth it is just as likely that the father wasn't named on the birth certificate, since Arthur was illegitimate. The same for a baptism. Stottesdon parish registers are not covered by the IGI past 1812.
What information did Arthur give about his father on his marriage? Illegitimate people often legitimised themselves on their marriage if they could by giving a father's name with the same surname as their own but the first name and occupation might be correct. Did Arthur have a middle name on any records you hold? Did he give his children any middle names which might be significant?

e.g.

Births Mar 1876
Parton  Joseph Massie     Cleobury Mortimer  6a 647

Marriages Jun 1871
Gittins  Elizabeth     Kidderminster  6c 367
PARTON  Arthur     Kidderminster  6c 367

Elizabeth is a widow on the 1881 census but that would be for propriety's sake especially since Elizabeth and Arthur are now part of the Gittins family household.

Is no father mentioned on the marriage certiificate?

Arthur Parton married Elizabeth Gittins or Gittings  june 1871 Kidderminster  6c 367  hereford and Worcester/Shropshire/Staffordshire/Worcestershire

I would chance the 1846  birth in Staffordshire for Arthur at Wolstanton to see who the mother was and maybe a father.

The censuses consistently show an Arthur Parton the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Parton born circa 1846 in (Smallthorne) Burslem. Burslem registers in Wolstanton registration district. This Arthur was married to Mary and by the 1901 census was a wood sawyer.

When someone is illegitimate you have to be very careful and take any information they give about their father on their marriage with a pinch of salt. If they marry somewhere where their illegitimacy is known in the C19th they nearly always leave the section on their father blank because in legal terms an illegitimate person had no father and the marriage certificate was a legal document.
If they married where their illegitimacy was not known and they could get away with it they usually chose to name a father who showed them as legitimate so he would definitely have to have the same surname as their own. The first name and occupation might be correct or it might not. It could be the details of a close maternal male relative instead or just the same name and occupation of the man himself who was getting married.

I have the marriage certificates of an illegitimate man who married 4 times giving different details each time. His first father had the surname of his step father (who definitely wasn't his father) as his first name - Miles. The second time the details were left blank and the third and fourth times his father was called John and then William. Each time on the three certificates where a father was named the occupation was different. As his status improved so did his father's occupation.

In some respects it is surprising Elizabeth on the 1861 and 1871 censuses gave her status as single. Many women in a similar position state widow for propriety's sake but obviously in 1861 and 1871 all her neighbours knew her position. By 1881 Arthur has moved on and married into the Gittins family. His business prospects have improved - perhaps by marrying an older widow Elizabeth Gittins and taking on a partnership with her aged father of a more established wheelwright and carpentry business? By 1881 Arthur does not want his illegitimate orgins on show and on the 1881 and 1891 censuses his mother is firmly a widow.
Since it is likely that Arthur registers his mother's death it might be interesting to see what information he gives e.g. Elizabeth the widow of ........ again the surname will obviously be Parton but you will be able to cross check any other information against any Arthur gave on his marriage 20 years earlier.

Deaths Sep 1891
Parton  Elizabeth  75  Cleobury M.  6a 339
