Squiggly writing help please
« on: Saturday 22 January 05 15:03 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
This is an extract from the 1851 census, sorry original copy is quite poor so this is the best I can do.  The surname of this family is Gage (but looks like the enumerator messed it up a bit). Can figure out most of it but ... (apologies for large image)

what I can't figure out is:

Mary ? (what is her initial) and where is her birthplace?
There appears to be a number 3 written right next to her initial, or is it part of it?  ::)

Thanks in advance
jonathan

If it helps, here are better shots of the 'initial' and 'birthplace' problems.

Well, Mary could just be Mary B - if you look at the B in Bloomsbury with the curly bits afront but just separated ???

Still looking at the other ................

Looks like Mary J B, was she a MaryJane with a middle name?

Don't know about the place of birth though - give us a clue  :) where would you expect her to be born and where in the Country was the census taken?

Suey, I wasn't going to give clues or my ideas so as not to influence anyone  ;) but ..
It's the 1851 census in St Luke, London.

Not sure exactly about the marriage, but there is a likely one for a plain Mary or a Mary Ann - this is unconfirmed though.

On her birthplace, I initially thought City ? Mx but also thought Clerkenwell.

The two Mary's I have in mind - one born St Giles, Cripplegate and the other St Ann Blackfriars.

Any help?

Jonathan  ;D

Does look like City something -
just had a quick look at Reg Dists on Genuki for London and Middlesex, closest is City of London, but I can't make that second word look like London  :(

My guess would be 'Mary B' born 'Clerkenwell'.

The first part of the place of birth looked as if it could be 'City' but I think that is due to a stray line from the entry below.

I may well be wrong but I don't think 'City'  - as in 'London' - would have been used in the 1851 Census.

Good luck!

hi there,

I think the squiggle is the letter B, if you have a look at the birthplaces the first one is definitely a B.

the places, i am not sure of but the third one looks like chiwigan, i think.

don't laugh if I have the place in the wrong county, I live down under so have to look at it upside down, and it's too hard to turn the computer upside down. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
