A. W. Lear
« on: Monday 30 June 08 20:02 BST (UK) »
Can someone please help locate A. W. Lear on the 1901 census.  The only information I have is he was killed 12 Nov 1918, no age at death.  He is buried at Gwaelod y Brithdir cemetery so he must be local to the area.

Appreciate any help
Roy

Did you get your information from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site?

LEAR, A W     Private   180157   12/11/1918    Unknown   Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)   United Kingdom   M. 75.   GELLYGAER (GWAELODYBRITHDIR) CEMETERY

I found his medal card, his name was Alfred William Lear, Machine Gun Corps number as above
His widow applied for the medals - oddly, the address was Mrs. Evans, 6 Glandd Terrace, Try Birlt (Tir-y-Birth?), Pengam, South Wales (perhaps who she was living with?)
(I believe Tir-y-Birth is in/ and Pengam another name for/ Gellygaer ) - please excuse my Welsh names, as I'm not from the area

Can't see a war pension though

possible marriage:
Jun 1909 Paddington 1a 123
LEAR    Alfred William  and on same page
ASHMAN    Margaret Annie   and    HAWKINS    Maud

Hi Philip
Thank you for the details on Albert Lear. I am not a relative, my interest in Albert is due to a project organised by my local history society.  We are researching all the names on the Gelligaer war memorials in commemoration of the start of the Great War.  Do you have a photo of Albert in uniform?
Regards, Roy

Hi Roy,
Sorry we have no photograph of Alfred. All my mother in law (Daisy) knew is that the had died in the first world war. She was only 15 months old when he died. Because he was never spoken about she or any of the family ever knew where he was buried. It was only when I did a bit of family history that I found he was buried in Brithdir Cemetery. She was getting on for 80 years old then and when I took her and my wife  to the cemetery it was quite a tearful day.

Hi Philip
So sad your mother-in-law never knew where he was buried; now that you have found his grave, his memory will live on through your family's history
