1851, 1861 Montgomery census
« on: Sunday 23 January 05 10:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I'm trying to trace the family/ancestors of Oliver Cadwaladr, b. approx 1836 in Llansantffraid. On the 1871 Wales Census he is living at Village, Llansantffraid yr Mechain with his wife Ann, b. approx 1842 in Llanfihangel and very young children. Would it be possible for you to try to find him on the 1861 and/or the 1851 census?
Thanks
Kim

Hi

Here's Oliver's family in 1861 living at Brogan Cottage, Llanfechain:

RG9/4261, folio 98, page 2

CADWALADR Thomas, h, m, 72, Stone Mason, MGY Llansaintffraid
CADWALADR Ann, w, m, 60, -, MGY Llangyniew
CADWALADR Joseph, s, u, 34, Stone Mason, MGY Llandysilio
CADWALADR Thomas, s, u, 27, Stone Mason, MGY Llansaintffraid,
CADWALADR Frances, d, u, 22, Dressmaker, MGY Llansaintffraid
CADWALADR Ann, d, u, 19, Visitor (crossed out), DEN Carneddan,
CADWALADR John, s, u, 13, Masons Lab, MGY Llanfechain

Oliver is no longer with the family and the only Oliver Cadwaladr listed is the following family living at Cottage, Guilsfield.

CADWALDER Oliver, h, m, 30, Ag lab, MGY Guilsfield
CADWALDER Elin, w, m, 29, -, MGY Welshpool
CADWALDER Mary, d, u, 7, -, LND,

The wife's name is incorrect though, so I'm not sure that this is the right one.

Jan :)

Hi JS,
Thanks. This looks like the family, but is it possible that the older John is actually Joseph (see Jan's reply) as I have an IGI entry that seems to match. BUT, I also have an IGI that lists a John, son of Thomas and Ann baptised around 1829 in Llansantffraid. Any suggestions?
Thanks again
Kim

Hi Jan,
Thanks for the info, and I think you're right - It ain't my Oliver. Both his and his wife's ages are much too old!
Thanks again,
Kim

Hi Jan,
Thanks once again. Yes please! I like to get as much info as possible, as you never know who's related to who, so I never say no!
Thanks
Kim
p.s. If you've got the 1851 census, do you think you could double check the older John from JS Lewis' reply. It just doesn't seem to fit in with the other info that I've got and you've given me.

Kim,

I have checked the 1851 and 1861 entries for the Thomas and Ann families - the older John is correct for 1851, and Joseph is correct for 1861 ??? ??? ???

I've listed them again just to make sure I've read them right!!!!  Notice the different spelling of the surname.

1851

CADWALDAR, Thomas, h, m, 58, stonemason, MGY Llansantffraid, Brogan
CADWALDAR, Ann, w, m, 50, , MGY Llangyniew, Brogan
CADWALDAR, John, s, u, 24, stonemason, MGY Llansantffraid, Brogan
CADWALDAR, Oliver, s, u, 15, scholar, MGY Llansantffraid, Brogan,
CADWALDAR, Frances, d, u, 12, scholar, MGY Llansantffraid, Brogan
CADWALDAR, Ann, d, u, 9, scholar, MGY Llansantffraid, Brogan
CADWALDAR, John, s, u, 3, , MGY Llanfechain, Brogan

1861

CADWALADR Thomas, h, m, 72, Stone Mason, MGY Llansaintffraid, Brogan Cottage
CADWALADR Ann, w, m, 60, -, MGY Llangyniew, Brogan Cottage
CADWALADR Joseph, s, u, 34, Stone Mason, MGY Llandysilio, Brogan Cottage
CADWALADR Thomas, s, u, 27, Stone Mason, MGY Llansaintffraid, Brogan Cottage
CADWALADR Frances, d, u, 22, Dressmaker, MGY Llansaintffraid, Brogan Cottage,
CADWALADR Ann, d, u, 19, Visitor (crossed out), DEN Carneddan, Brogan Cottage
CADWALADR John, s, u, 13, Masons Lab, MGY Llanfechain, Brogan Cottage

Perhaps the enumerator made the mistake or maybe the transcriber.  You will need to see the images to find out, but I'm not sure if they are available online anywhere yet.

A puzzle for you.................. ;D
