Could someone please look up John Aubrey C Howarth, aged 5 living in Rochdale on the 1901 census. I'm quite sure this is Jack Howarth someone who is related to me i know not how.
Am i right he lives with someone with theatre connections?

Could Minnie Townsend be John's mother?
Of course she could be but the short time between John's birth and the census doesn't leave that much room for a name change.

Minnie? - Is that short for anything?

Anyone know where Minnie and Mary are in 1891?

Thankyou

Mary and Minnie Townsend are still in Rochdale in 1891. On ancestry site (hope I am allowed to say this) someone has suggested the alternative surname of Sedgwick for Minnie. No Howarths here at this time

RG12; Piece: 3333; Folio 101; Page 29

9 Beswicke st, Spotland

James Townsend  37 Accountant born Yorkshire (Headingley? not sure)
Mary Jane,  40 wife   born Kent (Desford?)
Minnie,  dau, 20, born Leeds
Amelia, dau, 17, born Manchester
Willie C Conway, nephew, 5, born Leeds
Alfred Graham, boarder, 32, Theatrical Manager, born Middlesex
_____  ditto,  boarder,, 21, actress , born Monmouth

Sorry the last two should be 'married' - I inadvertently changed the actress' sex before and made her male - sorry madam

I think Minnie is short for Ermintrude?  But I suspect that sometimes it was Minnie from the start.

On free BMD there is a marriage JAS !894 Rochdale Vol 8c Page 47 with Richard Howarth and Amelia Townsend as two of the four names on the page.

You probably have the family in 1881 but if not:

None of my business, but is this the same Jack Howarth that played Albert Tatlock in Coronation St?  :D :D :D

It is indeed Albert Tatlock himself! - Well at least thats who we're talking about.

Is this John Aubrey Howarth our Jack?

See now this all started sometime ago, when me and my sister were first starting out on tracing our family history. Our Grandfather also a Howarth, said that Jack Howarth who played Albert Tatlock in Corrie was a relative.
The only thing other then that was that he may be a cousin. A cousin of whom i do not know, if a cousin at all.

So I set about getting him on my tree. Common sense would seem to suggest that Jack was a cousin of my Grandad's father - Fred Howarth born 1891 in Rochdale.
What with there only being 5 years between them and nearly 40 between Jack and my Grandad.
Online Bio's of Jack say he was born on 19th Feb 1896 in Rochdale and that his father was the Comiedien Bert Howarth.

My poor seaching has found nothing to link these two sides.
For a start Jack proved hard to find and this is were John Aubrey came in, he was the only Howarth who matched for the time in question Mar Quarter of 1896.
Plus the theatrial links with the Grahams is also a good sign, seen as the bio says Jack was involved in the theatre in 1908 aged 12.

Bert is tricky as well because it could be short of many different names and no matter which one it is going to be common with only a name to go on.

And the final sticking point is that Fred's father John has no family as yet because he lists his father as deceased on his 1889 marriage and there are many John Howarth's in Rochdale on the 1881 census to narrow it down.

So it seems i can't go up or down on either line to find a link.

Anyone with any ideas, i would welcome them

Thanks for all the info so far on John Aubrey the others in the household.

Looks like John Aubrey Howarth is Jack Howarth  of Corrie fame - I just found a one-line entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography   http://www.oxforddnb.com/index/101071099/

" Howarth, John Aubrey Conway  [Jack] (1896–1984), actor"

This is a subscription site, but it says you can access it through your local library.

I have a few Howarths in my tree also, which is a tiny excuse for my nosiness here.  And a fairly convoluted family link to another former Corrie star (famous for earrings - so not Albert Tatlock ;D)

Perhaps Rochdale Library could help with some info on Bert Howarth? Might throw up a few more names for you to connect with (or not).
