Iritana’s and Oliver’s children
About Te Paenga, Iritana, 1839
There appears to be no marriage certificate issued between Iritana and Oliver Edward Shelford, and to add to the confusion, our Great Great Grandmother, the person known as, Iritana, appears on numerous birth, death and some marriage certificates, under the following names: Edie, Edy, Edi, Iri, Ira, Ettie, Edith, and Ada! While her family names appear with just as many variations, such as: Te Paenga, Raihi, Raehe, Raiehe, Poinamu, Mokai, Mukai, Taua and even, Russell, which could be where we get her family names of, Raihi, Raehe, Raiehe, who knows? The Russell name, came after her marriage to William Russell. A possible reason for the numerous Maori names could lie in the fact that European settlers often wrote down (literally) what they thought they heard the Maori person they were talking to, say their name was etc - For instance the original name for Keri Keri was written in the European hand as, Kiddi Kiddi, because that is what they thought the speaker said, the speaker in this case, being Maori, who (at that time) had no written language, they communicated thru Whakairo (carving) Tukutuku panels made from harakeke (flax) and toitoi, Waiata (song/s) and of course Te Reo (the spoken language) and/or incantations. So the shortened version of the name Iritana is Iri, and when pronounced sounds as if you are saying - Iddi etc - the R in Maori is - if not always then usually - rolled on the tongue - just as the Scots do - hence the possible reason for the multiple (Pakeha/European) spellings
