Hi there,

Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons, I have a photo that is very similar in style. This one was taken in London though. I don't know whether the styles across the pond would have been the same, but this gentleman was born in 1854, and from his approximate age I would put the photo somewhere in the early to middle 1870's.

Just when you think you're getting somewhere....

Thanks for the photo Linda, you are right the styles do seem very similar.  It does rather put the cat among the pigeons.

Both periods would fit the persons on my tree too, so I can't use deduction and common sense to work it out.

Hopefully someone else out there can throw some light on it...

The vignetted head portrait style was popular from about 1860 to about 1890.

Nelles C Shorey shows up in the 1881 census too, age 15, and his father is an "agent".

Nelles C. Shorey was born in Ontario, Canada, about 1866, and was working as a photographer as early as 1889 in Cleveland, Ohio (U.S.), the year he was married.  He moved his photography business to Toronto, Ontario.  I'm not sure when this was but he had a studio at 151 Yonge Street in at least 1903 (when he advertised in the Toronto newspaper for a "young lady" to work in his office).

Later he had his studio further up Yonge (as I think another person has posted).  He passed away in February of 1932 in Cleveland, where it appears he again took up residence in 1924. 

His career spanned several decades, but seems to have started around 1889 or a couple of years before.
