William JONES
« on: Saturday 09 August 08 22:08 BST (UK) »
On the 1851 my g.g.grandfather, William JONES, said he was born at Blackwood, Shropshire.   Does anyone know where this is and which parish records I would look at to try to trace him back?

Many thanks,

Diana

Hi and welcome to Rootschat  :)

A long shot because I've not come across it in Shropshire. But there is a Blackwood NW of Penley in Flintshire which is on the Flintshire/Shropshire border  :-\

If you Click Here

The arrow shows it's position - see how close it is to the border  with Shropshire(dashed and dotted lines in blue)

Hi again Diana  :)

It is most likely the Flintshire place. The one in Caerphilly is so far away from Shropshire that I don't think it's very likely.  When I was young, living in the Shropshire/Denbighshire borders,  I always thought that Penley was in Shropshire  ;D ;D ;D

If you put a query on the Flintshire board, there are a few good searchers there who might be able to help. Though, I must warn you that William Jones is probably the most common name after John Jones  :-\

Thank you to all regarding Blackwood and William Jones.   I know the chances of finding him are slim but I have to try!

Just an update to let you know that I have actually found Blackwood in Shropshire.   It was south of Rushbury village and adjoined Lightwood.

Pretty sure this is right as I had found someone who I thought might be one of William Jones's sons living with an uncle in Staffordshire and the uncle said he came from Rushbury.
