In 1941, a detachment of te 807 were in Iceland as they completed the airbase at Kaldaoarnes

And then :

In 1942, as Gibraltar had become an important stopover for air traffic flying between Britain and Egypt, more engineer units (855th Quarrying Company, 807th Road Construction Company and an Excavator Company) arrived to extend the airfield.

Hello Annie, Hello Kyt - Thank you both for your help.
Really wonderful.
Is there anything about 1943 please?

As always chatters come out tops.
Thank you both again, and again.

With best wishes and respect for your willingness to help.
Old Jack

There is no one on the CWGC with that name and spelling killed in France.  Can you find him there?

If you can find the unit he was in you can look at the War Diary at Kew and that will tell you what they were doing and where.  There is a good chance he will be mentioned as they probably did not suffer many casualties.

Apologies, thanks for answering this, his first name is Francis and his surname can be spelt either McLaughlin or McLoughlin.

I searched on CWCG but only found his nephew: FRANCIS ERNEST McLOUGHLIN
Pilot Officer 196807 - killed on Wednesday, April 4, 1945 - buried at BARI WAR CEMETERY
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
The family remembers that FRANCIS McLOUGHLIN born 1905 was killed while operating a mechanical excavator in France during (or shortly after) WW2. Could he have been a civilian doing this work?
