Wharton/ Worton
« on: Wednesday 20 August 08 11:54 BST (UK) »
My g g grandmother was Mary Worton/ Wharton born about 1800 in Carlow according to census details. She married Hugh Hodson at Manchester Cathedral in 1825 but no father's details are given. She lived in Manchester for the rest of her life.

The surname intersts boards show no connections for this name in Ireland. Can anybody help with any links to these or similar names in Carlow or Ireland please?

Thanks Shane

The school mistress sounds favourite, as she is in Carlow, but my family were very impoverished. I'll put them all on file just in case.

Do you have any idea where I might find a baptism for Mary? She was RC.

Thanks again.

Slaters only contains people with Trades and the larger farmers, so if they had a smaller farm they may not appear.

Various Catholic parish registers are available in the National Library on Microfilm, there is a document somewhere on their website at www.nli.ie - if you dont find it let me know and I'll post a link.

It's very difficult to search Irish records without knowing where the family lived (parish if not actual townland not just the county).
Griffith's Valuation is mid-1800 but there are lots of Whartons listed, some in Carlow (didn't try other spellings):

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks Shane and Aghadowey,

Yes I appreciate this is a needle in a haystack problem. You'll know though that early censuses just gave birthplace as Ireland, so finding Carlow was a break through!!

Thanks for the links. I'll work at this.

Worton/Wharton

Elaine,
i have Alice Doran living in New Cross in the 1841 census, shown as Dorn. her maiden name was Wharton, and your Mary Hodson lived  around the corner in Ancoats,.both from Ireland arriving around 1825
Looking at the census's for 1861,1871 and 1881 you Mary had seven children and ended up in Gorton with her daughter Sarah.

Hello

That's really interesting. Does your Alice also come from Carlow? Have you found baptisms for Alice's children?

Hello

I have George born 1841 at the Roman Catholic Chuch of St Patricks Ancoats. thats where I got the  Alices maiden name of Wharton

There two Mary Hodsons in the 1841 census, I have traced your mary to Gorton living with Sarah running a provisions shop in 1881 in Gorton. Also if this is your Mary it shows Thomas her son born 1833  Ireland but George born 1832 in Manchester.
