Back to 'Burry' or 'Berry'!
I always said 'Berry' until i came to live in 'Wiggin' (Wigan) but here they say 'Burry'.
Same with Westhoughton - I used to say 'Westhorton' - they say
'West -ow -t'n

It's all down to local dialect here!!

When living in Orange NSW new announcers on the local radio station would always pronounce Cudal (pronounced Q-dell) as Cuddle and Canowindra (pronounced Can-noun-dra) as Can-a-win-dra.  ;D ;D

Where I live - Shrewsbury - has always been pronounced 2 ways,  either

Shrewsbury (as it's spelt) or Shrosebury.

I have always pronouced it the Shrew way and think the "posher people" say it the Shrose way.

How would you pronounce it?

Jan :)

I once lived in a lovely little place called CLAUGHTON ON BROCK in Lancashire.

The locals pronounced it 'Clyton'.

I moved away. :)

I still remember the radio announcer who pronounced Builth, as Bwilth

Freinds of my parents have lived in "Craig y Don" near Llandudno for over 30 years, and still call it craigy don (for those not familiar with Welsh its pronounced criyg uh don) near Landudno (not Llan-didno).

It always confuses me when people live in Abbergelly near Ril, and not Abergele near Rhyl. You wouldn't credit that people can still mispronounce a one syllable word, despite living there.  :-[

BARNOLDSWICK in Lancashire (or Yorkshire, depending on how old the person you are talking to is) becomes BARWICK.

I once knew a chap who came from there and travelled to Burnley to work.  He was 26 years old, had never been on a train, and it was the furthest he had travelled in his life.
And this was 1995! :)

Bury in Sussex is 'Berry' - Amberley is Amberlee but Ardingley is Ardinglye..
Houghton is 'O'ton, anything ending in ton is tun, ie Washin'tun, Storrin'tun -  although I did read somewhere that the only thing Sussex folk can be relied upon to agree upon is that they can never agree on how place names should be pronounced  ::)
