Arthur Louis Aaron, VC
« on: Friday 19 September 08 22:39 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for relatives of Arthur Louis Aaron, VC, of Leeds.
I know there is a statue of him in Leeds, and that his medal is in the Leeds City Museum.

He is commemorated at Downham Market, which is the air base he flew from during WWII.

I would like to hear from anyone who represented the family at the dedication of this monument in the 1980's.

Please send me a private message.

Thanks

I emailed the Leeds Museum in case they could direct me to someone but have had no reply.

I'm wondering if anyone in Leeds could offer any advice on how I can contact any Aaron relatives.

Any help appreciated!

As Wendy has kindly informed me, Arthur had a brother Frank, 1920-1988.
As his death was registered in Cumberland I will post an enquiry there in case any of his children are in that part of the country.

Thanks again.

Louis Aaron does have at least one nephew in the Leeds area, who contacted me about 10 years ago on the the subject of Aaron's Jewish origins. Although he never practiced, Louis Aaron VC was Jewish on his father's side, who was in turn a son of Russian Jewish immigrants. After the award the family denied the Jewish connection but genealogical research on birth certificates etc prove otherwise and the nephew was adamant that the family were in denial, and that he himself was proud of this connection and visited and did business in Israel a lot as a  result (if memory serves he was an importer or car tyres). He left me a phone number but when I called back a few days later the line was disconnected and I never heard from him again.

Aaron apparently boasted of his Jewish origins to comrades in the mess at the Texas air base where he trained (letter in the JC from a fellow pilot ,in our Jewish Military Museum Aaron VC file) and before the war was a member of the so called Salford ATC "Jewish Squadron"; when I contacted them about a photo of Aaron said still to hang in their drill hall, they never responded.

Hello Martin.
It was a long time ago and I have to confess that I never saw your very interesting post on this subject.  So I am sorry that I never replied to thank you for your interesting information.  The circumstances are that I went to Downham Market quite a few years ago to the dedication of a memorial to Aaron and to my uncle Ian Willoughby Bazalgette, both VC's.  I was presented with a small bronze plaque for each, and (if I can find it again) I would like it to go to a descendant of Arthur.  So if you still happen to have any contact information for his nephew please send me a message.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Charles

Sadly I have had not heard from anyone for years on this subject of Louis Aaron and so have to conclude that it is not possible to find any relatives living. If you hear more do not hesitate to call me on 07806  656756 on London

Hi there, I have just seen this post. Arthur Louis Aaron was my great grandmother’s cousin. We don’t really know much about him. He looks just like my dad though.
