Andrew Taggart Phillips - Dundee
« on: Tuesday 30 September 08 11:32 BST (UK) »
Hi there, I'm new here and looking for some help/advice on where to look next. I'm trying to trace my grandfather's records (and go back from there). I cannot find mention of him on the 1891 census where I would have expected the family to have been listed. The details I have are that he was a mill manager in Dundee and died aged 62 again in Dundee. I believe he was born in 1886 +/- 2 years and he was married to Jean Rodger on 11/1/1917.  According to family hearsay, his father was also a mill manager who spent much of his time in Calcutta and generally in India. His father's wife apparently died from something she caught in India and the father married again. Not a lot to go on but I would have thought my grandfather's full name would have turned something up.
Can any kind person please help to shed some light or advise me where to look next?

Thanks

Atom, I think you are probably spot on  ;)  There is also a marriage showing between a David Phillips and a Jessie Taggart in Angus (I haven't narrowed down to place) in 1881.

Wow - that was fast - and it looks spot on. I don't understand why that info didn't come up for me. I have searched extensively on FreeCEN and other places. Perhaps I was using incorrect criteria although I did try with and without birthplace etc. Thanks so much.

The marriage cert, available to view on line at Scotlands People, will confirm names for David and Jessie's parents. The most obvious birth for David on IGI:

DAVID PHILLIPS  Born on 29 MAR 1857 in Kirriemuir, Angus
Parents: THOMAS PHILLIPS and JANET FRAZER

This family's 1861 entry - everyone showing as born in Kirriemuir:

Thomas Philips 33, Fru (?spl) Stone Quarrier
Janet Philips 83 (me thinks a mistranscription on the age  ::)), b.
Margaret Philips 8
James Philips 6
David Philips 4
John Philips 2

Address: East Roods Mills Row, Kirriemuir

James' birth above was in 1855. Certs for this year, the first of official registration in Scotland, will give additional info on the parents.

Man, you make it all seem so easy! I've spent ages forraging around and haven't come up with half the information you have. No wonder you've got a "RootsChat Marquessate" status!
I really appreciate the information you have provided - I thought I was going to have to travel to Scotland to find this out. It's all in aid of a project for my 93 year-old Dad's Christmas present!
Another question, if I may? One of Jean Rodger's  brothers (Andrew Taggart Phillips' wife) died during the Gallipoli war (think it was of TB rather than in the fighting). Where might I find records of soldiers who died during the war?
