She was registered as Hailstone, with the Christian namesof Elizabeth Newton.  Her mother might have been living with someone called Newton, and Lizzie was given his name as her middle name.  You do need to get her birth certificate.  What seems most likely to me is that Maria was born to David and Phoebe, who subsequently separated.   Phoebe then lived with someone called Newton and had Elizabeth in 1881.  Maria could have been living under the name of Newton in 1881.  I can't find the family under that name in England - try Wales.

The only possible births of David Hailstone I can find are 1845 in Wiltshire and 1855 in Thetford, which fits your 1861 census.  That one appears to have died in 1872, so you need to find him on the 1871 census.  There's a possibility for a Phoebe Emily Wright born in Norfolk, but no Phoebe Elizabeths lived anywhere near.  Were they married in Suffolk?

Hi Again......

I have searched Findmypast for a death , or a marriage for David and Phoebe 1876-1890. There is nothing , in either name......

I feel certain , that you have the correct David Hailstone though. He is the only one with a father also called David . Here he is in 1871.....

Cottage , Barningham

John Baker / head / age 24 / ag. lab / born Barningham
Charlotte Baker / wife / age 36 / born Great Thornham , Suffolk
DAVID HAILSTONE / nephew / age 16 / ag lab / born Barningham

It is strange that we can't find them in 1881 , although not unusual . I have lost an entire family !!

I wonder if he joined up ?

Regards

JeannieR

All I know Marias father(What ever his name was  was supposed to have been, died in Wales helping save men in a mining disaster No date and Maria was in Wales in 1891 as a boarder in a school for disabled pupils she was stone deaf
Her sister Elizabeth Newton Hailstone was apparently drown in an accident in the river Taff in Cardiff She was on the 1901 welsh census as Lizzie Newton I thought perhaps that was her married name but she was registered at birth as Elizabeth newton Hailstone The plot thickens

Hi Jennyrob,

Did you ever get any further with this?

I have found a few interesting people in Cardiff which may or may not be the right ones but after all of this time you may well have found them already?
