Portlaw CofI Graveyard ?search for William Gray 1892
« on: Sunday 19 October 08 22:02 BST (UK) »

William Gray, a Presbyterian, died in 1892 in Portlaw. I know I need to take a trip there, and do some clambering over gravestones!

In the meantime, I'm hoping that some Waterford Rootschatter will know whether there are any GRAY graves in Portlaw (probably C of I, but possibly R C, as his wife was Catholic) - the family came there in 1875 and left about 1900.

yes, LH, that's my William Gray. His death notice in the Irish Times says nothing about where he's to be buried. It also says "American and Indian papers please copy", but I don't know what family would have been in America or India - possibly a soldier son in India.

Hi

Were you aware that William had lost two children, one in 1877 and the other 1878.  I notice different addresses at the death of these two children:-

Certificate No::       134
Margaret Gray died 27 Jan 1877   at Cahernaleague only 1 hr old of convulsions
Daughter of a Head Constable Police

Certificate No::       114
Sarah Jane Gray died 13 Mar 1878 at the Police barracks aged 5 yrs of Measles; phthisis
Child of head constable Royal Irish Constabulary

Cheers

thanks LH

just referring back to Williams Death Cert - my copy shows the daughter also living at Brown st.

I'm delighted to have the details of Sarah Jane's death - I knew that a Sarah Jane Gray had died that year and I assumed it was Williams daughter(I have the Baptism and my family didn't know about her, so I supposed she died young), but I hadn't yet followed it up.

I know nothing of Margaret - I'll have to see where he was stationed at the time - would Ballinamult be PLU Dungarvan? Townland Index says Ballynamult is in parish of Seskinan, PLU Lismore .. edited later - I see Cahernaleague is in DungarvanPLU...

There was an earlier Sarah Jane born in PLU Borrisokane baptised mid July 1870 - I assume it's her death registered aged 0 in late 1870. Once again I haven't followed that one up yet.

thanks again for those details, LH, much appreciated.
