Hartigan
« on: Wednesday 05 November 08 20:09 GMT (UK) »
According to documents our Thomas Hartigan says he was from Co Clare

We do not have a birth year but think it would be about 1844.

His date of arrival in New Zealand would be about 1869.

He married in New Zealand.

Does anyone with a Hartigan connection have a Thomas that disappears in
the 1860s from Co Clare.

A possibility that these names may be linked to his Clare family - Margaret,Martin and Thomas.

Hopefully someone out there maybe able to get me on the right track .

Thanks
Therese

Hello Terese

This will probably not be who you are looking for, but it appears on the end of a page of baptisms for my Harris family that was kindly obtained by Christopher (on this site) from Kilrush parish church of St Senans, Kilrush, County Clare.

Hartigan  Sinon parents William  Cath Foley 23/ll/1839 page 153
Hartigan Nora    parents Richard  Mary Sheahan 6/7/1830 page 53

As I said, probably not what you are looking for but I couldn't keep it to myself gathering dust !

Thanks for taking the time to try and help, Carol.

I will keep the info just in case it does fit the puzzle
at some stage.

Good luck with your research.

My great-great-grandfather was:
Michael Hartigan born: approx 1839, presumably in Parteen, Co. Clare

married:
Norha Kain born: approx 1843

both in Co. Clare, Ireland

Their son, Martin Hartigan born 1865, definitely Parteen, Co. Clare, came to New Zealand and married approx 1902 to Mary Ellen Murphy.

Martin Hartigan born: 1865 as above
died: 10 Jan 1914
Dyerville, Martinborough, New Zealand

married in 1902
Ellen Mary Murphy born: 1881, unknown birth place, presumably Ireland, she married an O'Farrell, next Martin Hartigan, in:
Ohau, Southland, New Zealand

they had three children, but I only know of my grandfather who was:

Martin John Hartigan born 1907 died 1984

married to
Mary Ellen Lundon born 1904 died 1988

they had three children:

The trouble I have with the Hartigan's in NZ is I don't think the place of marriage for Murphy to Hartigan is correct.  I believe there were 2 Hartigan family's in NZ around this time, one in Ohau and the other my direct line.  If there is a connection, possibly brothers.

I believe that there is a Patrick Hartigan, elder brother to Martin who emigrated to Australia from Parteen at around the same time.  Bit of a coincidence if unrelated given dates and that Parteen was not a huge place such as Dublin.  I have no details on the Hartigan's in Ohau or South Island of NZ - nor do I have contacts on the Patrick Hartigan line to Australia.

Hope this information is at least a little useful, good luck and look forward to hearing what you think,

Mrs H-D

Do you know for definite when Thomas left Ireland?   I ask that because there were four Hartigans on board the Schooner Joseph R Prim which sailed from Limerick (Ireland) to New York on 11 July 1848.  The three Hartigans were Mary age 30, Patrick age 6 and Thomas 4 and John, an infant.  This Thomas Hartigan would have been born c. 1844 - which is more or less when your Thomas was born.

Cheers
