Prisoners during the census

Hi All,

Can anyone advise if prisoners were recorded during the census and where we could find them?
We have both Sarah Blair aka Black aka Wilson (Naughty girl) and Michael Blair both in prison in 1881.
Both had been sentenced in Glasgow for theft & previous convictions.

The 1881 cencus on CD has a search facility but I couldn't find a match for any combination of your names.

The following are the institutions which are listed containing the words 'Glasgow' and 'Prison' (Glasgow coming up more regularly as a birthplace)

Hi Gerry,

I know they were sentenced in Glasgow, but I seem to remember that they were imprisoned in Perth.  I thought it might have been on the Trial Papers Outline, but I can't see it.  Maybe it was in one of the newspaper clippings we got.

Anyway, it might be worth a look at the Perth Prison.

There is a James Wilson, born in Ireland in Duke St prison in 1881, also a Sarah Wilson, the ages are slightly out but it could be them.

that sounds pretty promising. They were notorious for using alias names and were in & out of prison like fiddles elbows.
I'll check them out.

Hi Gerry,  Where were your McGovern's from originally? and were
they ever known as McGauran/McGauran? My G Grandmother
was Maria McGurn - Father Bernard mother Mary possibly ms Keirnan (+var)  believe from Altbrean,Kinawley,Co.Cavan.

I have a similar question.  I am looking at the 1881 Census that lists James Clarkson as a prisoner at 6 Bath Place Prison in Ayrshire.  He is listed as a clerk and a prisoner.  He later goes on to be a "drapery traveller," a reformed man apparently.  Any insights on this?

Verdict , Guilty , Verdict Comments: Guilty in terms of own confession, Sentence Penal servitude - 7 years. Previous convictions , uttering.

James Clarkson , age 24 , mercantile clerk , Address- No fixed abode, Origin - Native of Carmichael Parish , Lanarkshire.
