Spring Gardens, Tamworth
« on: Friday 19 December 08 19:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have found some people living in Spring Gardens in Tamworth in census from 1881-1901 but I can't find anything online about this area.  Does anyone on here recognise the name and is it still there?  Has it been demolished or had the name changed?

Are there any old photographs of Tamworth online, apart from Frith?

Many thanks.

Teddy

Hi Oldtimer,

Thanks, but is Spring Gardens still there, or where was it?  I can't see it on any maps.

Was it a Mining community, middle class area, slum, or what?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Teddy

It is definitely not there now. I think it was around what is now Spinning School Lane. It was working class housing that was demolished in the 60s.
Best wishes, Judy :-))

Spring Gardens is now a car park opposite the Police Station in Spinning School Lane. It is the town centre.

Lots of houses packed in together and demolished years ago

if you key Staffs past track into google and then Spinning School Lane in the search box a photo is there of a family which may be yours. Wouldn't that be good!

Guys Almshouses is the neighbour to Spring Gardens, this is still there. There is a picture of the Almhouses also.

Hi Teddy

I found a photo of Spring Gardens being demolished.

as you can see it was called Spring Gardens for either optimistic or ironic reasons!!
Best wishes, Judy :-))

Thank-you all so much.  Great help.

Yes, names for places are so ironic aren't they?  One village near here has a modern estate called "Rectory Meadow", problem is, it used to be the Rectory Meadow, now it is a housing estate!!!   >:(
