1901 census lookup please - Smith
« on: Tuesday 13 January 09 14:06 GMT (UK) »
hi Please could someone look for a George Smith either born 1895 or 1900 in Lancaster, Lancashire, i dont have the parents, i cant locate his birth cert, he may have been illegitimate (no father on marriage cert), his mother (dont know her name) married again and had a daughter again dont know the name of her 2nd husband and the daughter may have been called Hannah.

I was told he was born in 1909 in Lancaster but this is not so, hence the request to try and locate him.

Thank you

Hi,

On george smiths marriage cert the father of the groom is blank, does this mean he is iligetimate or simply that he does not know his father? or another reason?

I think i may have found him on the 1911 census, but im still confused!

I found a George Smith born 1901 in Lancaster (my mother in law says he was born 1909 in lncaster but she doesnt have a birth cert so not sure she knows for certain) his wife was born in 1901 too!
On the 1911 census he is George Smith and relation to head is step grandson, above him is Elizabeth Kirk step daughter status single!, above her John Kirk step son, status married!
then the head of houshold surname Hough with wife and a couple of hough children.

So im assuming George Smith is Elizabeth Kirk's(single woman) son, so im assuming the wife of the head of houseold is Elizabeths mother?
Im assuming this would fit with my George Keir who is illigit, but why is he George Smith and not George Kirk? or is George not Elizabths son at all and another sibling or person related to the wife of head of household?

Whew so complicated...

Sounds to me as though Mr Hough married the widow Kirk and took on her children Elizabeth and John Kirk

Have you looked for a Hough/Kirk marriage?

You have George's marriage cert - how old was he when he married as that will give you a guide to his birthyear if your MIL says 1909

The 1911 George Smith may be the legitimate child of a marriage between a Kirk female and not your George

Have you looked up the Kirk family on the 1901 census or looked for a Kirk/Smith marriage pre-1901
