Gardiners of Ramelton, County Donegal
« on: Tuesday 13 January 09 16:47 GMT (UK) »
Were the Gardiner's of Ramelton just that associated with the Viscount Mountjoy?

I am interested in James Gardiner who died in Kings County, New Brunswick, Canada in 1849 at a stated age of 101.  He named in his Will children James, Moses, Richard, Isabella, Jane, and Eliza.  The link to Ramelton is given by the apparent death notice of his wife Eliza.  The death notice appears in the 6 March 1858 edition of the New Brunswick Courier newspaper and reads "1st inst, Elizabeth, widow of James Gardner, age 90, native of Ramelton, County Donegal, Ireland."

My understanding is that the baptismal records for the Ramelton Church of Ireland church (Tullyaughnish) contains two baptismal records for daughters of a James and Elizabeth Gardiner.  Both daughters were named Elizabeth and their baptismal dates were 5 May 1806 and 11 April 1811.

I am hoping more can be found about this family.

Being that Moses is a less commonly used name, I still could not find him on any of the many passenger lists already transcribed.

This site appears to have a lot of information online. One must register before viewing results. http://www.donegal.rootsireland.ie/

adding, reading the death notice for Elizabeth again...it is so badly worded, as it is her age which would be 90 not that of her husband ( the age should have been stated before her husband was mentioned...)...and the place of birth would also have been hers...The children may all have been born there, but James Sr. may not have been from Rathmelton.

also have you looked through this before? The Gardiner papers. Your first post hints that you have, but others may want to read through as well...  http://www.nli.ie/pdfs/mss%20lists/067_Gardiner.pdf
