FINCH & WEBB Convict Deaths Tas or Vic?
« on: Saturday 07 March 09 08:22 GMT (UK) »
Hope someone can help with deaths for Robert Finch and Mary Webb or Mary Ann Webb - both convicts.
Robert aged 26 is sentenced at Old Bailey 1st Dec 1831 for stealing a shawl - 7 years Transportation.
After spending time on a hulk Robert arrives in Tas 31st July 1833 - age is now stated as 22 and married.

Mary aged 17 is sentenced at Old Bailey 4th September 1834 for stealing 10 pence and 10 half pence from her master - 7 years Transportation.
Mary arrives Tas 27th Mar 1835 - no age stated and single.

Mary Webb applies twice for permission to marry -
1. William Newell 20th Jan 1836 - no RGD Ref
2. Robert Finch 13th April 1840 - RGD37/3:1844/948

9 months after the application to marry a Mary Webb gives birth to Finch female  11th Jan 1841 - Robert Finch listed as father.
Mary Webb also gets her Free Certificate No698 in 1841.
Not sure which event comes first.

Meanwhile Robert has been released on 1st February 1839 -  two years before Mary.

IGI have a marriage extract 20th May 1844 Launceston for a Mary Webb and Robert Finch.
Also on IGI 15 birth and death records for children to Mary or Mary Ann Webb and Robert Finch. 7 are submissions and 8 extracts.

There are Departure records to Melbourne on the Shamrock 17th May 1851
Robert Finch       Depart Launceston Ref POL220/1/2 pg 36
Mary Ann Webb      "             "            "          "               "
Webb Children        "             "            "          "               "    three children

If this is their departure I don't know why they aren't travelling under the Finch name.

Next they turn up in the Goldfields of Victoria - I think :-\
Two births
Eliza Finch born 1857 - Mary Ann and Finch parents - Maryborough Vic
Mary Ann Finch born 1859 - Mary Ann Webb and Robert Finch parents - born Back Creek Sandhurst Vic.
Robert Finch death 1881 aged 76 Timor (near Maryborough) born about 1811
Mary Ann Finch death 4th Dec 1882 aged 66 Timor born about 1816

So if you take Roberts age to be correct on arrival this death date is right.
If you take Marys age to be correct on arrival this death is right.

Now I just need to know if this couple have a death Reg in Tas  ...  if not I think I have my Great Grandmother Mary Ann Finch's parents  ...  or a lot more searching to do ???

Sorry for all the rambling. Thanks for looking.
Regards Sandy

Hello  there
I checked to 1889  and  there does not appear to be a death for either one of  them in Tasmania

Hi Jenn,
Thanks for coming to the rescue (once again) with that death information.
The reason I wasn't sure even with that seemingly right info is because in "Colonial Tasmanian Family Links" which is submissions for just that there are 2 listings for children of this couple.

1. Charlotte Finch b Launceston 1849 marr William Hall 1865 Launceston
2. Edward Finch b Launceston 1851 marr Margaret Campbell 1874 Launceston

Since Mary Ann and Robert left Launceston in May 1852 I can't imagine they would leave children behind.

Do you have access to the birth and death records for their children.
What I have are IGI extract entries and may not be all. Some are submissions

Finch female b 11 Jan 1841 Tas
Sarah Finch b 2 Jan 1844 Tas
Robert Finch b 27 Jun 1845 Tas
John Finch b 26 Mar 1847 Tas
Mary Ann Finch b 13 July 1848 Tas
Charlotte Finch b 23 Jun 1849 Tas

Some of the births above have death submissions
Ellen Finch b 11 Jan 1841 died 12 May 1923 Launceston
Charlotte Finch b 23 Jun 1844 died Launceston
Mary Ann Finch b 13 Jul 1848 died 15 Aug 1848 Launceston

Also their are the 2 births in Vic BDM
Eliza 1857
Mary Ann 1859
Very grateful for all help given
Sandy

Hi,
I have just started researching my husband's family tree.  I believe Robert Finch and Mary Webb are his 3x Great Grandparents.  His 2 x Great Grandparents are Mary Ann Finch and Richard Alfred Patterson.  His Great Grandparents are Lily May Patterson and Enoch Arthur Taylor.  His Grandparents are Arthur Enoch Taylor and Hilda May Rycen.
Did you happen to find any further information on Robert Finch and Mary Webb?  I am interested in anything you care to share.
Kind Regards,
Sandra

Hi Sandra,

 ;D  Welcome to RootsChat  ;D

It is unlikely that your Mary Ann FINCH was the daughter of Robert and Mary.  Their daughter Mary Ann who was born 1848 died the same year.  Your Mary Ann was aged 21 and Richard was 25 when they married in 1882 so she was born c1861.

https://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD37-1-41p210j2k

Her death notice in 1929 confirms her approximate year of birth.

A 1929 Tas death certficate would give a place of birth and parents' names if those details were known by the informant.

Her burial record gives Hobart as her place of birth and there is a possible birth in 1861:

Edit:  Going back, I see you may think she was the Mary Ann born 1859 in Victoria, but it seems likely that this girl married in Victoria in 1880 to James LAMPIER and died in 1917.
