1911 st pancras(middx) look up please
« on: Sunday 08 March 09 11:06 GMT (UK) »
I thank anyone in advance if they could look up

Archibald edward Page
B1872 mile end district (making him 39+- in 1911)
His mother was Tryphena Page
Father(d) by this time was Nicholas page
married to elizabeth halls or fanny louise speed in 1896(edmunton)
but may have re married after this.

In this page family tree, I have come across quite a few m where the spouse has 2 names, ie the above, could anyone tell me why this is? I have cross referenced all the double names I have come across such as this one, but it seems as if the spouse married 2 people?? or did folk change their names a lot?
many thanks in advance.

Hello landylass,

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

I'm afraid 1911 census lookups are all pay-to-view so you would have to look that up yourself on this site  http://www.1911census.co.uk/

You don't say where you have found the Page family tree you mentioned, but probably the reason for the two spouse names for marriages will be that someone has found a marriage on freebmd and all possible spouses are listed, and not been checked to see which matches.

In this case:
for  Jun Quarter 1896 Edmonton  3a 647  there are 4 names on the page
HALLS Elizabeth
PAGE  Archibald Edward
SPEED Fanny Louise
WARREN    Solomon

so whoever looked this up hasn't checked the couples against the 1901 census to see which man married which woman.

Kind regards
Barbara

Hi landylass (and Barbara  :))

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Unfortunately the 1911 census is pay to view for everyone and I don't think we are allowed to do actual look-ups anyway, but from the index I can see a likely match:

Archibald E Page born ca. 1872, in St Pancras registration district.
Other people named Page in the same household seem to be Louisa M age 32, Mabel age 26, Phyllis M age 14 and Archibald V age 2.

The 1901 census shows a widowed Archibald Page born London, brother of a Nicolas Page age 38*, so maybe this was a second marriage, or the women are his sisters
(*and there's a 4 year old niece Phyllis M in the same household)

 :)

I see in 1901 Archibald was living with his brother and was a widower, so I checked the deaths and found one for Fanny Louise PAGE aged 23, 1897 March Qu Edmonton 3a 174, so it looks as if Archibald married Fanny.

thank you both very much,
Its seems our Archibald did marry fanny, who was fanny louise speed.
It then seems possible, he married her sister after fannys death, who was Louise m speed, I am lead to believe the latter marraige was in canada, as it was if not illegal(perhaps someone can say for sure?) it was certainly frowned upon.

H Carole,

Wife's sister was on the forbidden marriage list, The 1907 Marriage Act removed that from the forbidden list -Wife's sister and Husband's brother, provided the first spouse in each case was deceased.

Many couples ignored the law, and many clergy overlooked it.  :)

Hello Carole

Archibald Edward Page's mother, Tryphena, was my great-grandmother. I think that would make Archibald my grand-uncle.
I realise you haven't posted on this forum for more than a year, but please do so if/when you read this. By the way, my late father's records say Archibald was born on 15 July 1871 in Whitechapel.

Chris
