Symbols in Birth Entries Explained

A. Amended Record. Clerical error identified and amended. Suspected Spelling errors in names have not been amended. Generally Place of Birth or District Spelling, mother and father entered in wrong columns.

B. The entry was created from information in both the Registars and District Copies.

C. Corrected Entry. Errors were corrected by the Registar after Registration. Generally names corrected many years after birth.

D. Difficulty in deciphering Registrar's Handwriting.

E. Possible error identified but not amended. Things such as Alfred written as Aflred. Apparent incorrect sex listed such as Mary Jane Male, apparent transposition of spelling such as Lousie (Louise or Lucy) Yensch (Jaensch). Sex of child has been omitted.

I. Indefinite Birth Date Registered such as about 1 March 1850

M. Multiple Birth. Multiple Births were recorded as one entry. 

R. Registration Date used in absence of Birth Date

S. Supplementary Information. Additional unusual information included on Registration.
·   Adelaide Destitute or Lunatic Asylum listed as Place of Birth.
·   Father died before child was born
·   Legitimation Act Re-registrations
·   Fathers Residence stated as well as mothers
·   Residence as stated and Birth Place are more than 50 km apart
·   Father entered as Jr or Sen.
·   Fuller details available re births at sea - longitude and latitude.
·   Evidence of previous residence enterred.
·   Final names reduced to initials due to space problems

V. Variation in name spelling or interpretation of data noted on registration. Generally Informants version is used if the entry is clear

X. Cross referenced Registration. Major Spelling Variation between Registar and Informant. Confusion butween given and surnames and ambiguity of which parents surname is to be used for the child.

Z. Re filmed Registration. Code provided for Registry Staff.

Symbols in Marriage Entries Explained

A. Amended Entry. The Purchased Certificate will differ slightly re clerical information
·   Deduction of a Registration District
·   Deduction of a year where a new year date confusion was detected.

B. The entry was created from information in both the Registars and District Copies because:
·   The original was damaged or illegible
·   Some of the Central Registrations are typewritten and of unknown origin.

C. An original stamped or signed correction made by the Registrar was included after the event. Such corrections will not appear on any copy of the certificate issued prior to the date of the correction. IN many cased the district copy was not amended.

D. Extractors experienced problems with handwriting and extracted details represent a "Best Guess" The D entry may mean the whole entry or only one word is difficult to read.

E. A possible clerical error appears which was not amended by the extractors such as:
·   End of the month confusion such as 31 Sep 1890
·   An indefinite date such as when the date stated in the date box differs from the certified date at the bottom of the registration. Usually the earlier date was entered.

R. The date of registration was used as the date of marriage as the date marriage was either not recorded or indecipherable

S. The certificate contains information which may not be published such as:
·   Groom or Brides father is deceased
·   The Mothers name is stated
·   The age is listed in years and months
·   A subsequent divorce is listed
·   Other unusual information is listed

V. A variation exists in the spelling or interpretation of the names:
·   A slight difference in the spelling of the given or surname between
·   The Registrar's and the Bride and Groom's version. The bride and
·   Grooms spelling is preferred where it is clearly written.
·   The Registar has recorded two versions.
·   Due to poor handwriting different interpretations of names are possible.

X. A cross reference to another name has been included because the bride or groom have an alias

Symbols in Death Entries Explained

B. The entry was created from information in both the Registars and District Copies.

C. Corrected Entry. Errors were corrected by the Registar after Registration. Generally names corrected many years after birth.

D. Difficulty in deciphering Registrar's Handwriting.

E. Possible error identified but not amended. Things such as Alfred written as Aflred, Mary Jane - Male, 31 Sp 1860,

F. Informant is a possible Family Member

G. Age Guessed by Informant/Registrar

H. Deceased died in a Hospital or place of care.

I. Indefinite Death Date Registered such as about 1 March 1850

M. Identifies the Death of a Child of a Multiple Birth

R. Registration Date used as Date of Death.

S. Supplementary Information. Additional unusual information included such as:
·   Previous Residence Listed.
·   Length of Residence in Colony Stated.
·   Deceased Child's Father is Deceased.
·   Deceased Maiden Name is Listed.
·   Junior/Senior of Deceased is listed.
·   Younger Son
·   Prison
·   State Child.
·   Guardian Named.
·   Adelaide Destitute or Lunatic Asylum listed ad  Residence or Death Place.
·   Unusual Death or amount of information on circumstances of Death.
·   Sister of Church if known as -  religious name stated.
·   Fuller details available re deaths at sea - longitude and latitude.
·   Final names reduced to initials due to space problems
·   Remarriage on post 1906 registrations unusual enough to warrent this.

The S Symbol was not used for Occupations, Additional Family members as informants, single mothers, years in colony, number of issue post 1906 (standard information for this time period.)
