Marguerite - the mystery woman
« on: Saturday 28 March 09 20:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I hope I have started in the right place for help please. Frederick Hood my great uncle married for the 2nd time in 1931 a MARGUERITE BERYL GOODWYN HEWITT in Wandsworth. She is recorded on the marriage cert as being aged 46, a widow and her father was a Thomas William Sawyer-coach manufacturer(deceased). Marguerite died aged 82 in 1966 and Frederick aged 85 in 1967. The probate record of Frederick names a Marguerite Irene Williams step daughter.
What I am trying to establish is the birth and first marriage of Marguerite Beryl. Any help will be most welcome as I have drawn a blank.

Thanks

John

Hmm yes I see what you mean - difficult to find any traces of her, her father, or her daughter ! I suspect there has been some invention going on here.

There are 20+ Marguerite Irenes born between 1900 and 1920.

My eye was caught by these two possibilities, both births registered in Fulham RD:

3Q 1905 Williamson Marguerite Irene Fulham 1a 321
2Q 1907 Goodwin Marguerite Irene Fulham 1a 186

Hi - Here's a connection between a Marguerite Irene Williams and a William Cyril Williams (deceased) of Kingston, Surrey - she's his trustee in 1959. Hope it helps. http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/41790/pages/5137

Hi,

There is a marriage in 3q 1912 of a Marguerite
 St.Geo.H.Sq
Fahnestock    Marguerite S    Hill
SAWYER    Marguerite S     Hill

and the spouse

Hill    James N    Sawyer
Hill    James N    Fahnestock

This is obviously the one woman. Was there a previous marriage again to ?? Fahnestock?

She was old enough to have been a nurse in WW1 and may have married in France or a allied soldier being nursed in the UK.

If you can  get the details of this marriage it might be useful. As you say ther may be some invention going on.

regards

There's a 1907 passenger list which shows Marguerite Sawyer Fahnestock age 26 travelling to New York from Liverpool with husband Clarence Fahnestock age 35. Nationalities shown as USA

This looks like a promising clue.

William Cyril Williams is shown in the Gazette as being of Cherry Cottage, Perry How, Worcester Park, Surrey, and dying 5 March 1959.

This, then, looks like his death:

Mar qtr 1959

William C. WILLIAMS aged 69

Surrey Mid. E 5g 383

Which makes him quite old to be a husband of Marguerite jnr (given that Marguerite snr was supposedly born in the mid-1880s), but we'll see...

The 1972 phone directory shows Mrs M.I. Williams still living at Cherry Cottage, Perry How, Worcester Park - so she does seem to have been William's widow.

But was she the same Marguerite who was Marguerite snr's daughter?
