NEWMAN, Rebecca
« on: Thursday 09 April 09 08:54 BST (UK) »
Seeking leads on Rebecca NEWMAN  born about 1836 in Bath

According to her marriage certificate her parents were John NEWMAN and Marian ( Mary? Maryann) WILKINS , both deceased
Rebecca NEWMAN migrated to Australia in 1857 and married John Frederick MALCOLM in 1858 in Melbourne

It is said that John NEWMAN owned a bookshop in Bath.  Also that Rebecca's parents died when she was young and she became the ward of Captain William FISHER.  I have not been able to verify these 2 pieces of information

Hi there, I am new here and am looking for information on Rebecca Newman's parents if you have anything? I am stuck on her. She was my great great great grandmother. Thanks in advance.

A tree on Ancestry has her death certificate which gives her death as 15th February 1897 aged 61. Her parents on that are given as John Newman an iron founder and Marian Newman nee Wilkins.

I looked at that family, Ciderdrinker and it certainly seems to fit, especially with mother's maiden name. The only thing that put me off was the distance from Bath, so perhaps she wasn't quite certain of where she was born.

I am pretty sure that is the right family. I had the same census information. I am looking for more information on Rebecca's parents - and any generations before them. One thing this has cleared up and that is the fact that Rebecca's mother died in India, as that is what information I had (dont know where I got it from).

;D Hi would love to see that "Record" of the death of the mother of Rebecca being India,  what was she doing there, or are you now happy with the burial in Southrop?!

I think the Southrop record sounds more in keeping with my family tree. The India thing I found online, possibly from Ancestry about 10 years or so ago. I did think it was strange!

I wonder if this was the India death? Probably just someone seeing a similar name and "grabbing" it. The Gloucestershire one sounds far more likely.
