Residing in Togal Portugal between 1876 and 1889
« on: Wednesday 15 April 09 13:29 BST (UK) »
I am researching Charles Snook who had three children born in Togal Portugal.

Charles Snook born 1837 in Chertsey Surrey was a paper mill manager.
He was living in Portugal between 1877 and 1881, in 1878 he was living at  114 Rua Capillistras Lisbon Portugal.

Three of his children were born in Togal:

Henry G Snook   b 1877 Togal Portugal
William A Snook  b 1879 Togal Portugal
Edith M Snook    b 1881 Togal Portugal

In 1891 he had returned to England and was living in Egham Surrey.

Can anyone help further with information about the registration of births in the 19th century in Portugal? As far as I know the children were all british citizens.

They do not appear to be in the Consular Birth Indices, but I don't believe there was a requirement to register children born abroad. They may have been christened in Portugal, or when the family returned to England.

Thank you for looking up the Indices. :)

I will see if I can find any christening details between 1881 and 1891 in the Surrey parish records. :-\

Wish me luck :)

Hi Muffin,

I am researching Samuel Snook and his family for a friend whose mother was a Snook.

I have Samuel's Bible and history!
I always check addresses and Goggled "Portugal, Togal" in the 1901 census. Your message was on the top.

Here I am, joined RootsChat, logged in and my first posting.

Charles Snook had two wives: Flora - 1m, 2f, then Elizabeth Mary - 3 (4?) m, 1f.

When I have sorted out the family I will let you know.

Thanks for the details about Togal and the address. Is there still a paper mill?

Hi Clock Man

Welcome to Rootschat :)

You will have to have three posts here before you can send p.m´s (personal messages.)

My mother´s family were Snooks so I can help you further if you wish. :)

I am not sure when there is still a paper mill in Togal.
The paper mill in Woking was a printing works from 1896 to about 1970.
The land is now a housing estate - building commenced about two years ago.
It would be interesting to learn more about Samuel Snook´s bible. :)

Hi Muffin41

I see that I need to have some more posts before I send p.m's so I need to be careful about disclosing more about personal details.

The Bible is headed for Thomas Snook June 24th 1843 (not Samuel - sorry about  this). The book is about 30cm wide, 45cm long and 10cm deep - a weighty tome!

There are no details of the date of imprint.
The fly papers at the front detail Samuel Snook (b.15 Jul 1782); 7 children; the death of Sarah (d. 2 Mar 1821) aged 33;  it carries on for 2 pages and finishes in the death of Thomas Snook (d. 32 Jan 1851 aged 38 at Woking). All of this is the same hand - Thomas?

At the end papers the handwriting changes. The family ends with Flora Snook (d. 23 Feb 1872) aged 40 interred at Woking Churchyard.

I have sent an image, a letter sent to "Carlos Snook". You can see that the address ties up with the 1901 census.

Could you translate the letter about the death? Who is the female who died?

Is the Lisbon address a census?

Lots of requests!

Thank you,

TheClockman

Hi Clockman

Thank you for the few details so far, I will see if I can get the letter translated and let you know.
The Lisbon address is from the probate document; a filmed copy which I have in my collection.

When you have enough posts; you can p.m. me and I can help you further.

Hi Clockman,

Do you have the details for Samuel Snook´s wife Sarah (unknown maiden name)?

I have only a guess as follows:

Sarah (unknown) born about 1788 Middlesex; died 02.03.1821; buried 09.03.1821 Marylebone Middlesex. (The death is from you)
Their  marriage about 1810 Middlesex.

Also do you know when Samuel Snook  died?
