Doctors Common
« on: Monday 26 April 04 23:13 BST (UK) »
Hello

I have an ancestor whose address is given as 'Doctors Common'. Can someone inform me what it means.  The ancestor is Charles Bedford who married Sarah Desborough. Charles died about 1834 at Doctors Common. I am having a bit of a battle with my Bedford family trying to track the Hon. John Bedford's father.  All references points to Charles being his brother.  Their father was from Acton. John being second son among others.

Thanks.

I have the same query, Place Name or Legal Society?

I'm starting to think, perhaps both.
In the 1851 Census, my Ancestor, William Abbot, proctors registrar to the Archbishop of Canterbury has "Doctor's Common" listed as his birthplace, as well as being the birthplace of his wife, Hannah Abbot, nee Morgan.

I'm still reading and looking, but would appreciate any input.

I knew the name Doctor's Commons rang a bell with me and my extended tree.

Just tracked it down, I have William Weed, son of Benjamin Weed, being indentured to a printer in 1798 and the address of the Weed's is written as "Addle Street, Doctor's Commons". Addle Street is now known as Addle Hill and has been turned into a cul-de-sac by the construction/extension of the Faraday Building but it also has a junction with Knightrider Street which is one of the addresses given in the link found in Twink's post from 2004 which still works! From Twink's link there is an 18th Century map that actually shows Doctor's Common http://www.londonancestor.com/maps/baynards.htm

Hope that helps.
Regards,
Paul
