Addiewell War Memorial
« on: Tuesday 28 April 09 19:47 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone help please?

In Addiewell Village there is a Great War Memorial consisting, apparently, of three bronze panels.

On that are two of my grandmothers brothers.  C. Bell (Charles Moore Bell) 2nd Cameron Hurs d.and Lce Cpl W.Bell (William George Bell) 10th Btn Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders d.12th October 1917.

If anyone could take a photo or has any info on that, it would be wonderful!

The memorial was officially unvieled 21st December 1921.  In 1919 the Midlothian Advertiser advertised for names to be submitted for inclusion in the West Calder War Memorial.

As you can imagine any information out there would be so very gratefully received,

many thanks, as always,

Pip :D

Hi Pip,

If you go to The Scottish War Memorials Project, there are some lovely photos on the site of the memorial you're looking for, see:

If the link above doesn't take you straight there, go the to home page, look for 'Lothians', then look for West Calder.

You are free to download the photos!!

Hi Anne,

thank you so much for that.  The names are there clear as a Bell.  What a lovely memorial it is, quite unusual really!

Is it in the centre of Addiewell?  A site said it is in the grounds of the old library!

many thanks,

I believe you will find this monument in West Calder at the East End , near the railway station. Addiewell is a small mining village, a couple of miles further west.   There are(were) small villages / miners rows scattered around WC.  West Calder had all the shops, secondary school  etc at that time.  Now many closed as the new town of Livingston is nearby.

The old library is at the junction of the B7008 and A71 roads, just west of the church.

Hi Miska :),

thank you very much for that.  At least one of my Bells had more information which is great.  Thanks for the link,

Pip :)
