John Francis Madden
« on: Sunday 04 September 05 22:45 BST (UK) »
I need help - cannot find any record of death for my greatgrandad John Francis MADDEN (married to Ida Rebecca BEATTIE: his father's name was Owen).  He was born in  Cork 1871,  lived (& died?) in Belfast (1898=Divis St; 1901=Nile St; 1903 = Spruce St).
I don't know the exact date of death, but calculate it to be between 1908 when his last son Owen, was born, and 1913-because his wife remarried in 1914.  I've tried UHF, and also checked LDS records.
Any suggestions/help would be most welcome.
Jomalube.

John Francis MADDEN-death 1908-1914
« Reply #1 on: Thursday 24 November 05 21:52 GMT (UK) »
Please, please can anyone help to find record of death for my great granda:

John Francis MADDEN born in Cork 8/5/1871

son of Owen MADDEN & Mary RING: moved to Belfast (Divis St) about 1876

wife was: Ida BEATTIE m.1898;

lived in Nile st (Belfast) at 1901 census & was a compositor for the Belfast Telegraph.

could have served in Army?

estimate death between 1908/9 (the birth of his last child at Spruce St) and 1914 when his wife re-married.

His wife  (who remarried & became 'KERR') died in 1946 was buried in Glenalina cemetar Belfast Cit -  but John MADDEN was the owner of her grave?

Can anyone cast any light on this - I have searched high & low for details-please help.

Thanks

Maybe the John Madden who owned the grave lease was her son?

You are right, of course it was!  I didn't think about that.  So what now?  I guess I'll just keep looking.
Thanks your reply.

I wonder if he still worked for the Belfast Telegraph when he died if so they might have put in a death notice for him? its a log shot but just a thought.

That could be a possibility: do you know how/where I could check this out?

Thanks

Jom i rang the belfast telegraph and the personal girl looked on her computer but was unable to find anything she said they didnt hold records back that far.
Maybe you could check the 1911 census and see if he was still alive then and maybe it would narrow the years down for you, then you would have to search death records for the years your left with

Colette, Thank you for going to so much trouble on my behalf it's really kind of you.  I will indeed check the 1911 census, do you know if there is an on-line resource where I can check?

It looks like the only way to view the 1911 census is to go to Dublin.
Now what else can you do??? ok you need to look at Belfast street directories from 1908 to 1914 and check the address he last lived at, it was Spruce street was'nt it? when the title changes from his name to his wifes you will know that he died somewhere in that last year.
