Where are the Bowers hiding??

Hi All,

I am trying to locate the following family in 1881 and 1901.
I have them on the 1901 census in South Shields but can not find them earlier.
I do know that they moved between Yorkshire and Durham.
They are:

James Bower born c1851; Everton Nottinghamshire
Jane Bower born c1852; Ferryhill, C Durham
Thomas Bower born c1874; Barnsley, Yorkshire
Ann E Bower born c1877; Barnsley, Yorkshire
Alexander Bower born c1879; Barnsley, Yorkshire.
Maria Bower born c1881, Castle Eden, C Durham
James Bower born c1884, Whitburn, C Durham
Jane Bower born c1886, Whitburn, C Durham
Joseph Bower born c1889, Whitburn, C Durham

Can anyone help to locate them in 1881 or 1901 please.

Sorry I have them on the 1891 census...my head is pickled!!!

In the 1881 census you will find them indexed under the surname Bowes.
RG11/ 4971/ 51/94.

Thanks so much for that Jennifer; seems the spelling varied as when my Great Uncle was born in 1923 mothers maiden name was spelt as Bowes...

So have you already got 1901 then, as well as 1891?  Do you need any earlier census?

Hi Barbara,

I have them in 1881 now and 1891 but not 1901.
Also little Frances has disappeared in 1891...she would have only been 14ish but I can not find her with parents, nor a death that would be her.
Is it possible she could be in service at 14??

In 1901 have a look at South Shields RG13/4738 Folio 51 Page 9, listed as Brower.

Frances has disappeared in 1891...she would have only been 14ish

In 1891 have a look at Barnsley RG12/3777 Folio 86 Page 25 for a Francess Bower who is living with her aunt and uncle.
