Govan Colliery and Uries Row
« on: Monday 18 May 09 13:46 BST (UK) »
I have recently found out that my ancestor was killed in an accident at Govan No.5 colliery in 1913. Although I have the details of the accident. His residence at the time was Uries Row.
Can anyone please give me specific locations for these two place or, even better, locate them on a map for me.
I have looked and know the mine was close to Dixons blazes as it provided the coal for it but i cannot find an exact location.
I suspect that the housing was very close to the mine.

Thank You

Not sure if it's the same place (apologies if it's not), but this website has a photo of Dixon's No 5 Coal Pit

Can' help with Uries Rows but you can find Govan No 5 on http://www.old-maps.co.uk

Enter co-ordinates 260500 / 662400  Maps are available for a range of years but the 1914 map is probably most relevant for you.

Hope this helps

The link provided by JulzDS gives information on the "Lower English Buildings" which formed part of the Govan ironworks - in the 1881 census Uries Row is in the same Enumeration District (91) as these buildings and so must have been relatively close and within the Gorbals area.

PS Checking the 1913 valuation roll for the City shows no listing for Uries Row.

Thank you for the map reference, the photo and the enumeration district.

The map reference was spot on.

Unfortunately, I cannot spot Uries Row on the map. I shall go to the Mitchell library and see if I can spot it there.

Again, Thank you

You'll find it here right next to the Iron Works.

Snap! :D

Actually I have a great book called 'The Gorbals an Illustrated History' by Eric Eunson. It has 2 maps of Gorbals - 1858 and 1910 - copyrighted by Ronald P A Smith.

They are really informative showing all the factories and works in the area in great detail. If you live in Glasgow you can borrow it from the library.

Nel
