Hi Hywel, I was just getting excited then, thinking I'd found someone else with a connection.  ;D  Hope you're keeping well. We've had a few updates via the 1911 census, so before you spend anything on it, e-mail me or dad, in case we've already  had it. The enumerator for Golden Grove was actually Daniel Ambrose.
Bev.  ;)

Hello Bev,

I spotted your daffodils. I have got some 1911 Ambrose details so will email your dad.

Intersting about Daniel been the enumerator I shall go and look at his writing

Hello, this is an old post, but caught my eye.
I tried to find the page for St Michaels memorials, but didn't have any luck, maybe it has changed? Does anyone know?

My mother's family are from Talley, Llandeilo and Cayo, and I have tried for a long time to find Island Mill in Talley - my GGG Grandfather was the miller there.
Unfortunately his name was John Davies, so it is needle in a haystack stuff...

Hi Churchie,

This is the site;

http://talyllychau.org.uk/

but it seems to have changed a lot and I can't seem to find any memorials on it now - maybe contact them from the links at the top? There are phone numbers for St Michael's on there.

The 1841 Census for Talley has  an entry on page 55 of 60 for Island Mill with a John Davies, Carpenter age 33. The entry is on the same page as the property Island already mentioned. Does that help??

Are you looking for a a Saw Mill. a  Woollen Mill or a Grain Mill. Also what's the time scale? eg birth and/or death dates for John Davies your GGG Grandfather

Hi Bev,
Yes that is my John Davies. I have records for the rest of his life, but no birth or parents, which is my brick wall.

He moved around in the same area, but I have managed to locate him in every census till his death in 1884.
He was born around 1809 in Talley.
Married Mary Isaac in Llandilo-Fawr in 1831 (I have the record)

1841 census - Island Mill, Talley.
1851 census - Maestile Mill, Pencarreg
1861 census - Felin Newydd Mill, Caio
1865 - Rhosmaen Mill, Llandilo-Fawr
1871 - Maesteg, where he lived till he died.

He is listed variously as a miller, a farmer and a carpenter. I know Felin-Newydd was a grain mill, so imagine the others may have been, too, but not sure, as I have never found anything about them.
Mary Isaac was born in Llandilo-Fawr in 1812.
I don't have a record for her but that is definitely her birth year, as my mother grew up with a sampler she had made, with her birth date on it.

Their children were all born in the area. I have the birth certificate for Charlotte only.
Finding their births on the BMD is almost impossible with such common names, so parish records would be more helpful.
Mary b 1831
Joseph b 1834
Margaret b 1836
James b 1838
Charlotte b1841
John 1844
Anne b 1846
Elizabeth b 1848
Jane b 1850
Samuel b 1853

I would like to find a birth, parents for John Davies, and Mary Isaac, births for the children, or even any information about the various places they lived - I have hunted maps and the internet with no luck, other than for Felin-Newydd.

Hello  :)

Rhosmaen was a water-powered corn mill at grid reference SN6411224033. Search Rhosmaen Corn Mill on Coflein site:
http://www.coflein.gov.uk/en/search/

Have you seen this thread?
William Evans, Elizabeth Davies and their parents - any help?:

Morgan, thank you, a useful site. I expect I shall spend hours looking through it...
Caroline.

In fact, have already found references to some old family farms in Glamorgan. Very happy.
