James Holdsworth Ironmongers Wakefield
« on: Friday 19 June 09 21:25 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information about the above business in Wood Street Wakefield, they also had another shop on George Street in Wakefield.  The company eventually closed down in the 80s after many, many years trading in Wakefield.  It was family run (always a Holdsworth in charge) I have looked at all the census returns and can find nothing to relate to this family or Company, I know that in the 1970s a John Holdsworth was Managing Director. Any help would be very much appreciated, I really don't know where to go with this research.
Kind regards Susan

White’s 1853 Directory shows :
Ironmongers
Holdsworth James & Sons, Wood Street ; h York st.

Kelly’s Directory West Riding of Yorkshire 1893 shows :
Ironmongers
Holdsworth James, 230 Kirkgate & 13 Wood Street, Wakefield

The Holdsworths are also mentioned in Thomas Taylor’s History of Wakefield.

I believe Wakefield Local Studies library has quite a lot of information about the family though it is a while since I have been up there.
Cheers
Guy

Hello Susan

I used to work at Holdsworth's in the 70's - is it the family, the business or the staff you are interested in?
