Thanks Jen that confirms it then no doubt now whatsoever that it is my Great Grandmother Ann Hughes

1861 census RG9 peice 4373 folio 57 page 29

census is a couple of years out but thats not new is it.

At the marriage in 1844 28th May Ann gives her age as full age father Heny Hughes Labourer  her address living at Tyn y mynydd Llanddona Anglesey as does David Jones. taken from parish records.

It looks like 1839 in black and white, but there is only one cross thread missing on each part of it would be an 8 not a 3.

Looks to me like:

This work in hand my friend shall have been
When I am dead and in my grave  Ann Hugh
Aged 14

- and it looks like 1889 in colour, but Paula may well be right because it is hard to tell because of the similarity of the threads.

Hi All

As a veteran cross-stitcher who sometimes designs as well, I would suggest it is 1839.  Have a look at the attached .pdf (sorry I couldn't make it more immediately accessible but the technology beat me!)

Linda

no I don't mind Paula...

done a few real ones myself years ago... think I shall add a some notes in the back of the frames to stop any confusion in years to come  ;D

I just wish I could remember the significance of the plants and buildings on the sampler, I remember on one of the Antique Roadshow programs a while back, one of the experts  explained what the birds and plants meant, I think they were supposed to tell a story or explain something of the persons life  :-\
It would interesting to know the connection to the man in the tall hat holding the walking stick next to what looks like a church or school in this one!
