Do you know when your great grandparents lived there?

There was a paper mill at Low Teams, Gateshead until about the 1950s.  An 1881 map shows the paper mill but not Papermill Square

Do you know Gateshead at all?

John

There was a paper mill at Low Teams, Gateshead until about the 1950s.  An 1881 map shows the paper mill but not Papermill Square

Papermill Square is on the 1891 census - immediately after it is The Shuttles.

Go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and click on 'search'.
Then select 'coordinates' - a new page will open
Under 'new coordinate search' enter 423944 and 561681.
This will open up a present-day map.
Go the drop-down menu at the botttom of the screen and select 1894 - 1899.
You can zoom out if necessary by using the '-' sign at the bottom of the page.
You can now see The Shuttles and also to the north are Walker Street and Carnaby Terrace - both of these also appear in the same enumeration district as Papermill Square.
In the north-west corner of the map you can see the Paper Mill itself.

Hope this is of some help

Jennifer

Hi

Jennifer's comments re the 1891 Census are also true of the 1881 Census which makes reference to the Magpie Inn, Carnaby Terrace, Paper Mill Square and The Shuttles

The Square is not mentioned by name on an 1894 map but I have found it on a  map showing Gateshead in the early 1960s

I'll send a PM

John

Don't keep me in suspense  :-\  was I in approximately the right place?

Hi Jennifer

Of course you were right - as always

The 1894 map shows the Magpie Inn, Carnaby Terrace and the Shuttles

The 1964 map shows Atkinson Terrace and Paper Mill Square (although it doesn't appear as a "square")

As the Magpie stood at the corner of Atkinson Terrace, it takes both maps to put the area in perspective

I had a pint in the Magpie in December 1966 and, from memory, it was the last building left of the "old" area

Oh dear, I wouldn't say that  :-[

I really don't know Gateshead - you mentioned Low Teams, which I found on the map and went on from there. Pure luck really  ;)

Hi Neil

Apologies for ignoring your post

I think the photo to which you refer is the one on the isee gateshead site.  Unfortunately, it only shows a group of people above the caption "Paper Mill Square Mission, Teams 1905"
