Bristol, what county
« on: Saturday 11 July 09 15:28 BST (UK) »

Where actually is Bristol.   It isn't in the Somerset county but in the Gloucester county

Can anyone confirm where Bristol actually  comes under re counties.

On the 1881 census it states my gt.uncle as  William Chilton, born  Bristol, Somerset.
As this is before 1837 records, how do I go about finding a 'parish'

Thank you in anticipation.

some more information, from the Somerset OPC site (my emphasis):
Quote
The city/county of Bristol lies on the borders of Somerset and Gloucestershire. This is a grey area for many family historians. A person stating that they were born in Bristol may have been registered in Gloucestershire or Somerset. In general, however, the parishes on the south side of the river Avon are in the Somerset registration district and those on the north side are in Gloucestershire. There are of course exceptions to this "rule-of-thumb".

Bedminster for example is in Somerset.

here is a list of parishes:
http://www.about-bristol.co.uk/chu-00.asp

there is also a list of wards and neighbourhoods here, but it doesn't say which are in Somerset and which are in Gloucestershire.

To ricky and Bob.
Thanks for the information.      I will have a good look thru the info, unfortunately at the present time I am not too sure of the area in Bristol.

Hi Joburg
I don't believe I can see one William Chilton that looks familiar.
The William with Father John, Mother Esther, 26.08.1832 is the one I have been looking for..   He must have been in Bristol with parents travelling with the 3rd Dragoon Guards.  Now to find his father!!!!
Do you know if  St. Thomas' church  is the one 'St.Thomas the Martyr' built in 1793 now closed. - Would you know where I would be able to get the 'baptismal' infomation?
I'm delighted with the info and thank you very much.
