Cambridgeshire Regiment WW1
« on: Sunday 19 July 09 20:46 BST (UK) »
I inherited a copy of the Regimental History by the final commander of the regiment in WW1 Lt. Col. M.C.Clayton; it is a mine of information from the beginning to the end of the war. As is usual for the period only officers are named as a matter of course, other ranks had to make an exceptional contribution to be named; however, with this in mind I am happy to do look ups.

Ady, There are three mentions, viz:
1)p8 "The next night (14.3.1915) I paraded at HQ ----- to accompany them on a tour of instruction in the line. With me were Smalley, Butlin, Seaton and four sergeants."
2)p13 (16.3.1915)"Seaton's position had been overrun by the enemy he had fallen into the mud of a shallow trench, several Germans had trodden upon him, and he was very cross. He had the sense to lie where he was until dark; then he recovered and cleaned his glasses and crawled back into our lines."
3)p28(Precise date not given, but after 15.7.1915 and before 9.9.1915)"Another of the 'originals' met his death. It was Seaton,'a thoroughly conscientious officer, whose duty brought him from the peace of an academic life to one of bloodshed; distastefulness of second must have been accentuated by the first'."
      Hope this helps,
Roger

To both Babs and Sue, There is no mention of either man in the book. Sue, this is a little unusual for an officer not to be mentioned, it was usually other ranks who only got mentioned if they did something really conspicious. From the date you provided I believe that Lt. Blain was killed during the advance on Thiepval, probably by German machine gun fire from the Schwaben redoubt.
Babs, if you can provide me with any dates concerning your grandfather, I shall be only too happy to look again to find details of actions he was involved in.
