James Lane born Reading c.1834
« on: Wednesday 22 July 09 12:58 BST (UK) »
hello.

I have friends from the US who will be visiting Berkshire in a couple of weeks. Their family has been stuck on the above ancestor for a while, and they have contacted me to ask where best they should visit to try to find him.

I have no Berkshire ancestors (for my sins!) so am looking for advice..would I be right to direct them to the County Record Office? They don't have a specific parish of his birth, just 'Reading' from a previous census.

Any suggestions would be very welcome- many thanks.

Hi both and welcome to RootsChat Toady  :)

Alternatively, I wondered if the James you are looking for was the 67 year old Shoemaker staying with his daughter Edith on the 1901 census (earlier censuses show him slightly older)

If so, here's a very likely earlier census match for him:

1851
HO107/1692 64 35
Reading St Mary, Berkshire
13 Coley Place

William Lane, head, 60, Cordwainer, b. Wilts Hurst
Lucy, wife, 59, b. Berks Reading
Charlotte, dau, unm, 32, Needle Woman, b. do.
James, son, 19, Cord Wainer, b. do.
Thomas, son, 17, Butcher, b. do.
Elizabeth, dau, 14, scholar, b. do.

 :)

(Incidentally, the James Lane who emigrates to Utah is shown on the 1861 UK census with a birth place Thatcham)
